The House met at 2,30 p.m. Mr White gave notice that he would move, That if Wellington . is still to continue the seat of Government it is detrimental to the inter" ests of the Colony that the distriot embracing the City of Wellington, and the surrounding country within five milas of the boundaries of the said city, should be represented m the Houae ; or that any person permanently resident and interested m property within such district should be a member of the Legislative Council. The following replies to questions were given :— * A small allowance would be made to'- a postmaster doing telegraphy for the extra hours labor per day. Tele-, phone workers will be paid m proportion to the extra messages des« patched during the extra hours. In ; telegraph offices, where there are more than one officer, no BUch allowance will be made, as the officers can get off the time m rotation during the hours of labor. # No rule existed as regards the age over which railway laborers are not employed on Government lines. Mr Hobbs laid if the central line were adopted it would be a direct breach of faith, as the Taranaki line was surveyed and constructed as the main, trunk line. Mr Hursthouse did not ace why the colony should be called uppa to construct, a line of railway exclusi> vely for tourists, which argument had been used against the Stratford route. He would support the central line. Mr Joyce thought the House should accept the report of the Committee which was m favor of the central line. - Messrs J. B. Buckland and Bruce said/they would give a lukewarai support to the Central line. Mr Smith pointed out that the House completely ignored the Napier line. : Mr Browne would vote for the central line, seeing the report virtually ignored the Napier, route. Mr Samuels moved the adjournment of the debate. Capt Bnssell seconded, but suggested that the debate be adjourned to that day six months, Mr Grigg opposed both routes as the colony could not< at present afford' the expenditure. Mr Moss did not care which Toe was adopted, but as . the central route would not benefit. Auckland he should like to see the Stratford line constructed. ; J.
