Consirlerable excitement has existed iv Balmerston snice Saturday evening when it was rumored that Mr Fiizsimmons and a lad named M'Eeuzie hjid'been drowntd while crossing the iVCanawatu near Mr Fitzsimmons' residence. Yesterday it was reportel.th«t the ftodies hrfd been tound by MessriAJcers and Waldegrave, but this state* meat was subsequently contradicted* Inquiry seems only to make the affair the more mysterious. Lt appears that no one saw the drowning occur, and the bodies have not been found, while the fact that the horses the parties had been riding were found tied up on the bank of the river still further height* ened the mystery. It is said, however,, that the horses were thus tied by some bushmen who fouud them .wandering about loose. Search parties aie now out endeavoring to find some trace of the missing ones. There appears hut-slen-der ground for hope that tbeir lives hive not been lost, and further additions thus made to the long list of those who have fa.len victims to the treacherous river.
