A, few days apo a monstrous outrage was com* zmtted m Melbourne. The details, as given m the local papers, will hardly beai re-publiehing, but, briefly, the facts are stated to be these:— A young man and his sweetheart were strolling m AlLert Park one ' evening, when five men sud.denly tushed out upon them from a clump of trees The man was seized and threatened with a bludgeon Bhould he cry out, and the girl was thrown on the gxmnd, and most shamefully 'assaulted. She tcreamed for help, upon which two of the ruffians left her companion, and held her down by force. A blacksmith hearing the cries, eventually came to the rescue, and on his appearance tbe biutes~ they are not worthy to be called men— decamped. ' The youqg fellow an' 3 the blacksmith gave chase without - avail, but it was' light enough to afforda good view of them, and a lengthy description was given to the police. The uni'ortuusfe victim was taken to a doc tor, whose examination bore out her statement of the outrages she had been subjected to by the scoundrels.
