DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
GREAT LOSS OF PROPERTY. ----------------------------------- A most disastrous fire occurred in Feilding on Monday night last, which totally destroyed Messrs Loudon and Haybittle's, Bradley's, and T. M. Drummond's, stores. The fire apparently, started in the left hand corner of Loudon and Haybittle's store, upstairs, and quickly spread all over the building. It was first noticed by Mr S. Daw, who happened to be passing, and doubtless, if a supply of water could have been commanded, the fire could then have been got under, and the catastrophe averted. The Feilding Corporation Offices had a narrow escape, on account of the intense heat. The insurances on Loudon, and Haybittle's store and stock is £2,500. The insurances on the other buildings is not at present known. Great excitement prevailed in Feilding, and everyone endeavored to do their utmost towards getting the fire under. Much sympathy is felt for Messrs Loudon and Haybittle, as the latter only Monday left with the Volunteers for the front, and the news of so severe a loss will be a blow to him.
