Sir,—^Tn your report of the late meet-, vng of the Manawatu Highway, I notice, a letter from U, W*rd, Esq., Judge of : the Assessment Ccwirt % containing grave reftectionaon the manner m which certain valuations of this district ha ye been made.. Perhaps a good many ratepayers may conclude that I am the person referred to,, as it is well known that for many years «I held the appointment of Talner forth©, whole county. In order to protect myself; I tave written to M;r Ward, request-, ing him to say whether his: remarks apply to. me or to some one else. When I receive it I will publiih it for the bene-. fit of whom it may concern.. I think my knowledge of New Zealand should pro-, tect me from the statements made by Mr Ward, thaj; rauno and toitoi were mistaken for crops of wheat by the valuerreferred to m his letter.— l am &c, James Linton.
