DETERMINED ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.
At an early^hour yesterday morning the residents ;df the town were somewhat alarmed by the report that a man had banged himself m, Taonui street. Upon bur reporter repairing to the locality to verify the truth or falsity" of the statement, he fouud i that while matters were not quite so bad as. had be^n repor^. there were 1 good grounds for the runW, as a man named Pa wson, a batcher, employed m Mr Manson's, had made a de» liberate attempt the night previous to hang himself: ; - - ;w: From what our reporter could learn, it appears that Mr. Pauson and" bis wife do not live happily together, and when the former went home on Thursday bight, 'they had bad' a quarrel. Mr. 'Simpson, « a carter, who lives close by, when returning to his home on the night m question, hearing a row and the screams of a woman, went into Pauson' s house to see what was the matter. After i a few moment's conversation, the latter went out through the back door, and as he did not return for some time, Mrs Pauson asked Mr. Simpson to look after i him, as she was afraid something was wrong, as he had threatened to do away with hims. lf. Simpson went to a shed at the bottom of the section, about a chain | away, and there found Pauson hanging by the neck, with his feet about two feet | from the ground, and quite insenI sible. As he had no knife with him, be lifted the body up m his arms, so as to ease the strain on the rope, and loosened it as much as possible, at the same time shouting for assistance. His cries brought Mr George McCarthy to the spot, and the rope haying -being cut, Pawson wa« carried into the house, where after somt time his consciousness returned. The/ escape from fatal consequences, was most narrow, for had Mr Simpson not gone out when he did, or been wanting m the thbugbtfulness to hold the body np, and thus arrest the strangulation, Pauson would, assuredly have been a corpse. Yesterday morning he was very weak, but got all right m the afternoon, when he was arrested by Constable GMespie upon the charge of attempting self-des-trnction^ and lodged m the lock-up. He will be brought up this morning before the Justices. Pauson, who ia well known m Wtnganui, from whence he came to. PalmerstOßy is a hard working industrious man, and domestic difficulties ahg infelicity i* assigned a» the cause of the rash act.
