"HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE."
itsr evening paper published m Pal-, merstou oil- Saturday evening, informed its .readers that Mr. George "Wabben E-TTssEiiLjOne ofcthe candidates for the Foxtpn constituency, had retired from the contest, and Mr; Russell's reported retirement was made the handle for hurling an inane sneer at that gentleman. Had Mr. ErssELT/done what ho was accused of, he would have been entitled to the 'thanks', of every person who had the true interests of Foxton at heart ; who wished to see a locaT'nia'n protecting local interests, and not splitting the support so as ■to' hand the trust over to the ambitious Buller, or the aristocratic Wilson. No ! doubt Mr. Russell is a thorn m the side of Mr. Wilson's trumpeter/ aud when he announced .tljut, -tliat gentleman had retired, ";the\yis]i was father to the thought." JVTr; ; 'Russell did not retire, nor -does, he now intend to retire, although lie very generously offered to do soj so as to give the elector? a: chanco of returning a local man m tire person of Dr. Rockstrow. That gpjuleman, however, was not to be o.utdone m frenerositv, and 'though assured of the very largest amount of ..-up pout, he not only waived his claim... i.o. the- constituency, but has Vlon'e and" still intends to do, all m In's power to secure the return of our,, evening contemporary's bete noir— a local candidate — Mr George Warren: Russell. : It 'is a somewhat suggestive fact that although >T)r. RoeitSTROwJ published m Saturday's Foxton paper, an intimation that he ; liad ; retired in 1 Mi\ "Russell's favor, Tificl notwithstanding that twelve hours later the veryj-opposite appears m the columns of our contomjVornry. since then not one line has-lreen* written to correct its misstatpment^or to- inform its misled .rpaders as to the true state of affairs. ' Well, perhaps, the two persons,,most .interested are better satisfied!,/ at., the ..peculiar course pursued—Mr. Russell, can afford to smile at the .•imbecile sneer, which was hatched m the nest of a falsehood ; and no doubt the silence has payed Dr. Rockstrow,, [a, volley of abuse for his. unselfish and generous conduct. "However, looking at it m another light, abuse ; from such a source is the greatest praise a man could obtain, and consequently as Dr. Rockstrow and not Mr. Russell is entitled to it, we give the honor where.it is due.
