A well attended meeting of gentlemen interested in 1 the 1 formation of a fiorti? cultural iSociety for Pnlmerston, was held on Thursday afternoon, »t the Royal Hotel. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and haying, explained the object tor which the meeting was, called, invited discussion tin the ''matter; Mr.' Keelinu proposed" that a Society be formed- to embrace the tire objects;; viz., a, Horticultural, and Pastoral; and Agricultural ; and tjwt. such ; Society be called the Agricultural and Pastoral As'"pciition of Mannwatu. Hip reason "for making tbi» propos-tioh was, to secure to the >eciety the Government endowment of nine acres of land, which is situated at the hottom "f Cuba-street, and is ..fast becoming valuable property. j Mr. Snelson felt a doubt as to the wis- 1 dom of combining the two Societies, and : asked whether there might not be a diffi- | cnlty m getting, the grant,- when it was set aside for Agricultural ajud Pastoral pvrppsev • M. Kebltho thought they might call the society by what name they pleased, there could be no difficulty m securing the grant under the the mode "proposed
by him. He did not intend that the proposed Horticultural Society should constitute the Pastoral and Agricultural Association, but it would form tkeneuclnt of such, but this, of course, was a matter forjthe farmers to control. Mr. Fergoson said that by such an amalgamation, matters would be somewhat complicated. Was it not advisable ■ to push on the project for which they had niet, and consider the other matter afterwards. The gentlemen prrsent, could at anytime form into an Agricultural and Pastoral Society., . . The Ch\irm an agreed with the last speaker, stillhe thought they should take _step 3, fa secure the Government "grant, as. "Mr. Keeling had remarked, the land was becoming very valuable, and by at once securing it, they would be giving an impetus to the Pastoral Association. Mr. Snelson submitted a code of rules for the working of the Horticultural Society, which were adopted, and he then proposed that this Society be called "the Palmergtoa Horticultural Society." 'i' Mr. Fbbgtjson moved, and it was carr'ed, that the managing committee should consist of five members, and proposed the i following -gentlemen, woo were elected -..-—Messrs Liuton, Snelson, Parker, Metard, Hoe, and the mover. Mr T.S. Hoe was elected Secretary. -, The CfiAiiiMAK suggested : that a committee 'sbtrald be appointed to; carry out the necessary arrangements for the formation of a Pastortvl and Agi icultu'rai' Society.
