Sir, — I have th« honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 30th ult. referring to the appointment of a joint committee to confer on the advisability of abolishing the toll on the Rangitikei bridge near ! Bulls, and to inform yau that it will, be laid before the Council at its next meeting. Meanwhile, I am directed by the chairman of this Council to iatimate to vou, that he is of. opinion that a confernce of committee's is hardly necessary. The County of Manawatu, he considers, is more interested in the matter than Rangilikei, and if your Council were to pass a resolutiou in favor of abolishing the toll at the expiration of the, present lease, and asking tbe concurrence of this Council, the proposed abolition would, he feels sure, be agreed to by this Council, k conference of committee's might be desirable to ascertain the state of the bridge, and to discuss the best means of ultimately rebuilding it, but the requisite information relative to the bridge account is asfolhwi: BBIDGB ACCOUNT.

The letter was signed bu the clerk— and after some little opposition was received, and npon the motion of Councillor Sanson, seconded by Councillor M'Lenuan, it was resolved " That the toll gate at the bridge; over the Rangitikei rivtr, between Bulls, and San don be abolished at the expiration of the present lease, and that/ a copy of this resolution be sent to the Rangitikei County Council."', Letter from the Colonial Secretary's Office, asking for a return of the number of p'eisons having plurality of votes. The Clerk was instructed to comply with the request. Letter front A. Fallopn, ferryman, at the Lower Gorge, asking the Council to erect him a dwelling house there, also for a refnnd of half the deposit paid by him as security on the leasej . . The Council decided that the application could not be entertained, as [the letter was signed only by Falloon, whilst another man named Harvey was a partner. From HV:S; Thynne, enclosing the following resolution passed at the last meeting of the Foxton Local Board : — " That this Board is of the opinion, that before abolishing any toll, over any ferry, 1 or bridge, the Council of the Manawatu County should satisfy itself that it will inflict no injury on other portions of the County, ana this Board respectfully points out that the abolition of the toll on- the Rangitikei bridge would lessen; the chances of the, tolls now very heavy r on ; , the' Foxton ferry, ever being reduced, as the abolition of such tolls would cause" the Awaheu: Riding to be keld anawerablt for a large ; sum towards the . erection of such bridges, should any accident befall*, and that no adequate reserve fund, even for maintenance, kaii yet. b«en formed, This Board, whilst desiring to see all tolls, reduced, request that no toll shall as yet be abolished." Received, ' 'JEetter from E. Feck, applying tor a lease of Ferry Reserve Ho, 269. It ;was resolved "That tenders be ealled for leasing Ferry Reserve No 269, tenders to close at next meeting." iFrom H. Sanson, stating that he had forwarded a man named Daniel Lea to the Wanganui Hospital at the expense of ''the Council.-— deceived „ From Wilson and Richardson, stating that the time had arrived when measures should be adopted to provide a passable -road for the increasing number of settlers in the Kaitmna Block. •'-''-'-' ■ It was resolved " That the Engineer pe instructed to report on the cost of completing Mackay's road to the boundary of the Manawatu Block, and also on the state of Wilson and Richardson's line from the Mekino road; to the Manchester Riding boundary, with a a view tola grant being voted to assist in making therane." ■ ■■'■-. Mr. Sly, who spoke on behalf of the deputation, said tht distance of road was now, and had Veen all thiough the winter in a moit disgraceful condition, { and was a means of keeping away intending settlors from the district, beside which, people ofttn had great difficulty in getting along with a dray very lightly laden. The deputation trusted that the Council would give the matter their immediate-and favorable consideration. It was resorTcd " That the Engineer bo instructed. ,to prtparo plans and specifications for forming and metalling about 57 chains on the main road running through Karero, towards Palmerston, and that a committco bit appointed to accept tenders for tke work, at any time during this month.
