THE PALMERSTON CEMETERY.
At a meeting of tlie trustees, "which, itu held a few days ago, fch* Hon. Tretiurei;, Mr. Jnraen Linton, submitted the following report and balance sheet.:—? Cr«ntlemenj— Afc the date_ of our last meeting, as you. are.. aware, ths Cemetery Trust Fund was indebted to tho Bunk of Aiii«tralasia m the sum of £64 15s 9d. This sum was further increased to. £65 15m 3d. An effort was since made to wipe off the debt, and I am happy to. say we were quifco successful m our attempt, having raised the »sni o£ £G8 4s 6d. M follows
At the beginning of thia" y«ar^ ,finding ; -'a •mail balance m hand, it was thought {advisable to make an effort to improve bur Cemetery by securely f encing it, reiribving the whole of tb« unsightly stampa and roots, and sowing it with grasa ••ed. This work baa how been faithfully completed at an txpense of-;g6(M7s. 6d, which, sum haabeea advanced by the bank to the Trustees by discounting their bill for £75 5s 6d, whioh fallsrdui -the 4th of October "next, and against, which- theFi. is. now on hand £11 Oa, 9d, learing a bbslance^to: be .provided for'otlZGt 4s £jd. :,Thia surnj^lv trust, will be readily 'raised from ; the^aale of burial gites, and from the proceed* "of an entertainment about :to 'be .given .m the Town Hall at an early date. When the above 'aum is,raised f the whole of the work m connection with' the /idJemetery-' improvements' will hay« been paid for. Arrangements have been made with 1 Mr. Palm'efson,- surveyor, to survey the Oeme.tery into the usual-sized ■actions, peg each 'off, 1 and supply a plan of the aamt, f or the future,; guidance, of those connected with the management of the insti-' tution. For this work thy s^nx of -jBS6 J will have to^be prdvided''in l ib6ttt 'five rnontha from date. V Wh'en thfe 'pl'in'has been r'tgisj teredi then the'Tru'sfoes.will be in'a position to dispose of the land to thoie'i requiring : sites. There are stilt a few improvements to carry out ioy the publio • convenience, Buch as proper bridges and gateways to connect, the main road with the Cemetery, so that.- vehicles* ca'ti be driven right ,into> the enclosure, instead of: blocking up the main ' road aa they do: now during ; ;th« funeral service. This work will not entail any great" expenditure, say, about £5.,, :As a ; T>rocaution'against fire and in', order to kerfpth* grass low, I have ati'thbrised the custodian, , OVIr. Lanrenion, to keep a few sheep upon the enclosed ground. This- will, m time, much 1 i*nprove the appeai«nce{ 6f> thflaSte by destroying the fei-ri, r and '[ii&proving <thii! grass pasture, s . besides completely., removing t the danger of a fxvi during the summer. m'Onthsl >'• -, .::':• t .-., ,■;•/•. . v ,'. ■.. . !
