THANKFUL FOR SMALL FAVORS.

Is its Saturday's issua the Marton print has the following : — " The Manawatu Times of the Ist instant has a leader on the late session. Our contemporary remarks : — ' Some of .the best speakers were heard on rare occasions, and then to a very decided advantage — notably an old Native Minister and a young one — Sir William Fox and Mr. Sheehan.' Surely the truth is at last beginning to dawn upon the Times. It has previously looked upou Sir W. Pox as the Jews looked upon Nazareth —nothing good could come from him." Now, with regard to the foregoing, we have only two remarks to make. If the small modicum of praise bestowed above upon the Advocate's " Occasional Correspondent " gladdens its or his hearts, far be it from us to deprive them of a pleasure at so small a cost, and they are severally, individually, and collectively welcome to it. Secondly, should Sir William Pox " or any oder man," deserve commendation at our hands, we trust we are not so mean and contemptible as to rob him of that to which he may be justly entitled. The Advocate has so persistently, misrepresented, villified, and slandered Mr. Ballance, that it cannot understand how respectable journalism can soar above its own petty sji'.e and mendacious malignity. Should the Advocate itself reform its ways, exhibit a tone of honest independence, instead of being the po«ket organ of the gentleman whom ifc glorifies, it will find that we shall be among the first to give it credit for such a desirable change.
