NEWS AND NOTES.
THe SchoolniaJster Abroad — On a former occasion we gave some unique, spelling m tho address of a letter forwarded to the "nharmon of hiwa Boar."^ We do not know whether the same artist has turned correspondent again or not, but the Town Clerk on Wednesday received a document addressed toA' Bourcouncel bamerson. 1 ' ;The : orthography w,a can reproduce, but we would not attempt; even if it were possible, to imimate the fine bold hand ./which is the property of the correspondent. J. Coming Sales.— To- day Mr. Snelson will sell, — under orders from Mr. Coleman, as Trustee m a bankrupt estate— a. mjxel gathering of articles, which would be sure, to be of use to any one. On Tuesday next, Mr. Amesbury will hold his usual monthly sale at his yardsJ, and from the very exten sive array of : stock advertised m another column, it bids faroto be the most succe- 1 ; fuj one he has yet.held. ; On. the following day, th,e. sam,e. gentleman will offer a firstclips cottagei, together with the furniture. Use and Abuse— lt w»s said of the celebrated Daniel Q'Connell, ' that; he was the beat abused msn m Jail Ireland. If' all that has been sard, written, and printed about Mr. inspector Foulia, were collated and published, it would be found that there weire sufficient volume*/, to. constitute a pretbj fair , lib' ey, in. itself.. Like the eels—which, it is said, get used to,' arid aveTather pafctial to being skinned— Mr. Foulis ought to 1 be, pretty, used, to, being alternately; peltiS arid' petted-. The discussion as to his worth or worthlessness bids fair to rival Tennyson'a "> Broplfc"- and if he were only a grocer, on a draper, such wholesale gratuitous | advertising would. ™*ke his pile m six nj.e^tjht,.
Hymen's Locks.— A modest request was made to Mr. JEeeling, the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, a few days since. A young lady of Continental extracr tion, whom he had 'married to a countryman Of hers, about twelve months ago, ;caiiae'to> - him to know if he could unmafry her. She said her husband had gone to JAustralia^ and 1 She wanted to get married again^thuaproy- ; "ing that every burned child, does not' dread the fire. The Registrar told her the thing was impossible, ungallantly adding that if he could only perform such a feat, and undo half the evil he had been party to'Jby*marrying, he would have •to . resign the -Town Clerkship to attend to the Benedicts. Taming "a Screw."— On Friday morning an equine, whose outward proportions resembled a Connaught man's hatnotable for the irregularity of its outline — ca*ne to .'grief, Tand; ; the. way was this. It had been quietly brousihg on the roadside as the ballast tain came along, when, no doubt, fired with a desire to show its iron rival that it also poiesied mettle, it pricked up its ears and put on steam. The race was an exciting one, and the beholders .were about to lay two to one. on the Spectre, when — - — a cloud of dust, four legs gyrating m the air, and the hack of the ballast train half a mile m the distance. A moral on the punishment of pride, might be easily taken 'from the subdued manner m which the vanquished slowly picked itself "up, J : t'hntw'a look of re|iroac„^»^hqfe, Y whoJwtreJ; laughing at it, and retirMwthriKeltier, of a fence to recuperate. -X Council.— The usual •ffimSthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council takes place on Monday, but we hare learned incidently that the expected pitched battle is not likely to come off. The mover of the resolutions with regard to the Engineer, on maturely re-considering the matter has come to the conclusion that the scheme is unworkable, and consequently if an attempt should be made to rescind it, he will offer no opposition. We are pleased to hear that such will be the case. All are liable to take lip a wrong view of a matter ; there ar;e few who. having done, so, will admit, even to themselves, ''■hat they have, done so and there are fewer still who will follow that up with an admission of error. TWe presume the new member for Manohcster Riding, Mr. Douglas, will take his seat on Monday. A Curious Blending.— lt is not often one seas the supplemeat of a paper Carefully folded, packed, labelled and delivered within the folds of its rival journal, but such an anomaly came under our notice last night. It maybe recollected that we chronicled the two-fold blessing of whioh the town of South bridge was the recipient, m becoming within two days the possessor of dual journalistic representation. An organ was about to be established, and that indefatigable "paper planter," Mr. Joseph Iyess, took time' by the forelock, and won the race by a day. The.twc papers com-, neted for a few weeks, when the older sold out to the younger,, and an. amalgamation took place. With his usual enterprise Mr. Ives had arranged for the printing of supplements, ibiitJas 'those interesting .addenda are generally prineed m distant cities— if ' not colonies— there was no time for giving I notification of the amalgamation,, ahd con- ! sequently the supplement of the Guardian bore the name of the Advertiser. The Borough, Vacancies. — It would appear that we are to have a contest for the three vacancies m the Palmerston ' Borough Council, AThe nominations. took place on &^mMo^o^^^^^ candidates '"'being" brought into" the" field. ' The following are tlie candidates, with their nominators ; — Henry Segar , Palniersofl, nominated by John Waldegrave and Sylvester Coloman ; Thomas Mansbn, nominated hy Alexander Ferguson and John Dungan j John Mowlem, nominated by James Linton, and Henry M'Neil ; and Iror James, nominated by Thomas. Hoe and Sylvester Coleman.' As the number of candidates are m excess of the number of councillors required, a poll ''will have to be taken which will take place next Thursday. With the exception of Mr. Palmerson, it will be, seen that the other candidates have never been m the Council, the chances of each are pretty evenly balanced, and there seems to be some considerable difficulty m spotting the winners. A deputation; -consisting of Councillors Ferguson, King and Dungan waitad upon M? Snelson, with a request that he would allow JhimVelf Jto be.put m nomination., but although he expressed himself pleased the courtesy paid him, respectfully declined, '-b'nfc- stated that at any future time he would be happy to offer his services,
