A telegram from New Yoi'k states that a disastrous fire has occurred m California by whi'-li the town of Eureka, on the Humboldt Bay, has been almost destroyed. In consequenco of repeated threats and covert acts of violence the police authorities at Gork have established a system of espionage, with, the object of detecting offenders. The system, however, has proved ineffectual, and m consequence of the obloquy heaped upon '"officials connected with it they are becoming discouraged, and hesitate to follow their instruction*. Since the late acts of coercion m Ireland. larg"e, purchases, of arms are, being made m that .country, and trouble . is expected after the harvest, when landlords will claim back rents. The language , used at public meetings is increasingly aggresive, and speakers urge the formation of a union m Ireland, numbering 300,000 and advise the tenants to refuse to pay rents and to harrass the landlords. Serious religious riots -have occurred at Portadown, Downpatrick, and Dungarvon and at the latter town the police fired at 'the mob, killing one man and wounding six. 'Whilst mass was being celebrated at a chapel, at Ghjelore, m Austria, a sudden flood rushed down, and the water filled the chapeli to the height of ten feet, and fifteen persons were drowned. A Burglary has taken place on the premises of Mr. Eldon.'jeweller ; £20,000 worth of property, including jewellery, plate, and a great seal presented to George IV., were stolen^ The Queen has refused the use of the Savoy chapel for the celebration of the marriage of the Baroness Bui'dett Coutts. A telegram published m the Daily Neios states that Mahommed Jarkand and others are proceeding to join Ayoub Khan. A.t Cabul, the fortifications have been allowed to remain intact. The Grovernment are aware that- inflammatory papers had been forwarded from Stamboul and circulated m India with, the knowledge of the Porte.:
