SHE MEANT WELL, BUT-
A most laughable affair occurred a few days ago — laughable to all but the'priacipal parties in the comedy. It may be. remembered that a horse- stealer, named Mai honey, was arrested upon the charge of robbery, and in. connection with the crime, a publican in Napier, to. whom the horse was sold, was summoned as a witness. Now> Mrs. Boniface was very loath to part with her good man, or to allow him to] take such a tedious journey as. a trip to Wanganui, so in her innocence she. secretly despatched a telegram to the police authorities, innocently imagining that such a; lame applogy would excuse his attendance. A warrant w,as issued for the arrest of the contumacious witness, and entrusted to Constable GHllespie, who forthwith proceeded on his mission. On reaching Tahorite, however, he came across his man, who, in, company with * trooper in charge of the horse, wm heading this way on his. road to Wanganui, and when informed by the Constable that he was ii\. possession of a warrant for his arrest, as may be imagined, his language, was none, of the mildest. When consigned to !th'e.vlpokup at Palmnrston, his 'time was. |Taried in von ing eternal vengeance against the authorities, and sorrowful speculations as to "what; his pop?; -wife would think .were.- she to know that he was thus being treated as a criminal." Upon being brought bjefore Mr. Ward-at-Martori, he imperiously demanded to know tke reason of the treatment to which, he. had been subjeeted, swearing, to see the. case, through, even if it ; eost him,; him every penny he was worth". ' '• Judge 6f\ his disgust and surprise to be handed the telegram, from, his own wife which had caused all the mischief. If that publican be only lianer eupugk to, carrv out one
fourth of what he his vowed. against his meddling but well-meaning wife, there is good cause for believing that she has dispatched her last telegram.
