INDUSTRIES OF- PALMERSTON.
THEi MANAWATU BQILIN(J-pOWtlf. It is now exactly twelve, months since we gave a long description of the Shenstotie Boiling-aown Wor^s, then m full swing.. At that time we gave, a detailed account of the machinery and appliances at command for carrying out the industry. The twelve months whioh have since elapsed have notbrought profit to the then proprietor, or yielded him, anything like an adequate, return tip,bn;hiß outlay ;! on ths contrary, a sumof money has been sunk by him whjch can neyer be recovered. This, however, has not been the result of a, failure of the 'industry, but to misfortune of' quite, a different nature, which could have been neither \ seen nor averted. On our first professional r visit «yery thing bow the forecast of a long
and prosperous career snd there could be no doubt suoh would have been the case but for fche calamitons flooding and destruptjon of property whioh repently took place. It is a matter for congratulation, however, that m the general wreck and. ruin the plant and machinery of the boiling down escaped injury, and consequently that important industry will stiir.be continued. A company has been organised to carry on the operations commenced by Mr- Warburton, and the services of Mr Turnbull secured as working overseer. When it is remembered that every part of the sheep can be utilised m some shape .or other, there will be little doubt or question as to the venture proving aprofitahle oi^e. The barns oaa be smoked the legs sold, fresh, while the heads, lights, and livers are boiled and, mixed with bran and pollard, form a staple article of food for the" pigs of the company. The feet cuq be utijised for feeding the furnace, f qr, mixed with wood, they form a oapital fuel, while ras the other portions are boiled down such a thing as waste, i* unknown. As. we hare before, said, the plant being the same as that of which wr. have already given an extended discription, to. attempt to particularise, would be. more re: iteration, and consequently we will rest "con? tented with wisning the new company the prosperity whioh their enterprise dtserres.
