WEDNESDAY, MAY 26,1880. THE KAIRANGA BLOCK.

THE Manawatu Times

"Words aro things, and a drop of ink falling like dew upon a thought, produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think."

At a late sitting of the Wellington Waste Lands Board, it was decided to make the roads thoroughlythrough the Kairanga, and m order bo do this it [ was 'cleterniiried that the land should not be placed m the market at present 1 . To use' a paradox, this i« good news, and, at the same time, it ia anything at all but agreeable intelligence. Bearing m mind the action of the two Governments—Provincial and General— With regard to the unfortunate .settlers of Fitzherbert, who bought their land upon the distinct understanding' and good faith that roads should be made through it by the State, we hail with- satisfaction the intimation that before on • penny is paid, the Kairanga Block will be accessible from every possible line of road. This is the pleajant side of the picture ; the reverse it to be found m the deep disappointment which the delay will cause the numbers of persons who nave been waiting on from day to day, and month to month — =eating up the money which should form' their capital — m the expectation of securing a homestead for themselves and their families. We know of several persons who have come to the district, and remained m it, for no other purpose,, but yefc the extra, strain put .upon their patience and their pocket may be such as they will not care to bear. The whole of the proceedings with regard to tha matter, a a reported m the Wellington daily Press, were contained m the following short paragraph : — "'TKe Chair maa read a report from 7VT <*■ Marohan*, Chief ' Surveyor, on the Kniranga Blo&lc, near Pal merston. Mr. Marehant also attended at the request of the Board to giye somo additional inform, atiim re'-g-ardinuf the division of the bloetr. and the roads that had been laid off. It was ieoiflpH that the lines of roads shown on the" plan- be made to intersect; also, that the bfock should not not be offered for sale at present." It is a pity thafc the members of tho Board— seeing the very great interest whifth lias been, arid fs now being taken m the matter, and the' very grav;e importance, it is to this -district— did riot go a little further, and state to what time the land had been withdrawn.
