NEWS AND NOTES.
$EVT CotTXCILLOtt. — Monday was the day of election for a Councillor to fill the vacancy m the Corporation, cnnsed by the resii;n»tnn of Councillor Linton. Mr. Henry M'Neil was the only candidate nominated, and consequently the Returning Offi.-er has declared him duly elected. AsnnnaT School Committee. — For the ofa/'e-bearers m connection with Ashurst Scho"l there wore no Ip<r than fourteen 110---nntir»n« nnd upon a resort to the ballot, the following were the r^pre'pntfitivefi chosen : -Messrs. W. WhiMev, Chniivnnn ; Camer >n Secretary nnd Tre-isum* ; nnd Nelson, William", Somer*. Benzip. and Page. The cumulative voting m some cases was responsible for the results. The Manchester Sawmill. — Messrs. West and Coop?r, the proprietors of the newly ereete 1 sawmill at T.ionui, have perfected all their arrangement*, and having the nyicUinery m thorough working or ler, they last week made a start. In another column fclicv intinvite to porson-s m want of aupplie? of Limber, that they nrv prepared to furnish totar.a bo>ir:l-< and scantling m various lengt lis, and upon the most reason erms. Change of Time Tabus. — The manager of the Itiilwiv Line notiflpi tint on and after next Monday the present timetable will be di«'*on< inued, and a n<>\v one substituted. Wo have not. ns yet seen the one to be suh^tii nted, but w? leirn from Mr. Rotheram that the attentions are not very great, the principal beinsj thnt tlie morning train from Halcombe to Wnngantii and back will only run on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, nnd Saturdays. The Late AccinE>'T. — We hear with plc-isure thnt Mr. Wah'i. who had his le^ broken on Thursday, was so far convalescent as to be removed to the residence of his friends, nlthoiisfh we fear it will be some time before the m limb will be strong enough to be usei. An error occurred m our report of the ac -ident, a< it. was stated that Mr. Walsh and the vtOir-le which collided with him were both travelling the same way. This is scarcely correct, inasmuch as they wers proree line; m different • directions when the aff.iir happened. Taondi School Committee —A. meeting of householders nljng the R-»ngitikei , Line, was held m tlieSchoolhouse, on Alonday evening m accordance with the Act, for. j the purpose of electing a committee For tba cnauing year. Several namea m exoe33 of tile required number (seven) were proposed, but after a ballot had boen taken, tha eleotion resulted a» foll.nvs : — Messrs. ykor- , man, T. Kuii(ht, Jjocelock, Meuibery, Mof-,. f^t, Ra^bjand Oollin*. It will ha thus 88;n that with the exooptioa of Mr. Skertnan, none of the old Committee have been tedEducation at.. -^-Those who are aniious for improving themselvas have now been presented with ttty exceli«ut opportunity
of fining ■so. Tn neither column MY Ernest Plowdcn intimates that, should he receive sufficient inducement, he intends opening a..-, evening c\n**, m hook-keeping, algebra, Latin, drawing, land measurements, and several other branches of education will be 1 might. Personally we have little knowknowledge of Mr. ' Plowden, but we have seen some very excellent testimonials wbioh ne possesses, testifying to his capacity as a private tutor and public teacher, amongst the Litter, certificates from the Cunteibury ami Wellington Boards of Education. Obituary. — The many friends of Mr. L^pman Levy m this town will learn with regret that he expired at his residence early yesterday morning. His nephew Mr. Salomon Abrahams received a letter from town on Jfondnv evening announcing that he had been suffering from an attack; of incarnation of the howola, but intimating that he was fast recovering, and jfc wa» hoped that he would be about m a few day. Yesterday, however, Mr. Snelson received a telegram that tho unfortunate gentleman had succumbed to the disease . His death will cause deep regret wherever it \s learned, as Mr. Levy's open-handed charity and liberal generosity was known to many to whom o| herwise he was personally a stranger. Another Fjbld Day.— There will be another sitting of the Resideqt Magistrate's Court to-morrow anil judging from the appearance of the cause li*t, the day •will be no light one. We believe there are two informations to be preferred against Mr Dyl^«, of the Palmerston Hotel -for selling liquor on Christmas Day, and the other for disposing of spirit uom drinks at the Sports without a special li'-pn=p. In the latter ca«e 1 V offence was purely a mistake upon the purt of the pnhli-ar), who imagined that the ppr'iiis.sion grant eJ him fan tho Boxing Day sports held good for the 22nd, and did n~>t have it renewed. It i* to bo hoped therefor.-? that a mere nominal pennlty will be inflicted, particularly n% we believe the case has been hrvisht. by the police as a sort of pre-odent. m future. Loozrxq Oft t-or Xr^urn Hip?. — Con. sideiuhle amusement was created at the meeting for the elertion of a coinmiffce* to represent the i'almerst on School, by the thon^htfulne^s of one candi.late, who evidently believed m the motto, " Every man for himself, and H-od for us all." Before the election took place the chairman pointed out that according to the Act, seven votes wore allowed each elector, but it was competent for him to give one to oac.li of the seven candidates, or record the whole seven votes for one man, and totally ignore the oi her six. This hint was not lost upon a wily "old soldier," who determining not. to be left out m the cold, plumped his whole seven vote* for himself, and b,y this clever mare secured his return. The look of the defeated candidates who had fairly distributed their votes when they discovered the snyirt rme, wag a picture worthy of a painter. A> T Expla.vvtio>\ — On account of tho prf"»« of matter lust i*«ue we wore compelled to «idly eurtnil the report of the meeting m Brndley's estate, and we find t-l'at m doing so we omitted to publish one partiniInr wiiich m justice to London, Kavnittle, and Co.. shoulcj have been ma/]e known The meeting was called amongst other reasons, for the consideration of a claim by those gentlemen of over £103 against the estate, which had been rejected by the tnis tee. After hearing the evidence produce!, the creditor-! njt only unanimously aiknowleged the justice of the debt, but allowed Messrs. Loud >n, ILvybiftle., nn.d Co., 1.-iw expenses to the amount of £20. which they had incurred m an action with the tru-jfee. Mr. London has called upon u<», and nskpd for this explanation, which as they were perfectly entitle 1 to fan* pHv, nnd we hud no desire whatever to withhold or suppress any of the facts, we make with much pleasure. Food tor tite Dtstrtot Court. — s we expected, the chirvjes of perjury and rohherv, preferred asjuin^fc Joseph Russell and John Shaw respectively, alter a p if.ien,t hearing before t lio Resident Magistrate on Siturday, resulted m prima facie cases beinz made out and the commit till pf both prisoners for trial at the next sittings of the District C urt. The evidence m the case against Rus.sell was substantially the same as was gi'-en on the previous C.iuvt day, nnd was of such a conclusive character, that Mr. TTiwkin=>, counsel for the defen dant, called no rebutting testimony, and advised hi=< client to reserve his defence. Rin"ell r incp 'ii<s am>*t bus been O''t on bail, but as the Miaistrue doubled the amount, his bondsmen declined to renew the bail, and m company with Shaw he was relegated to WangiUiui G-iiol on Monday. The first nnmeil prisoner, is a. new arrival m the Colonies, having arrived a few months since m the Z.'aUudia, and we believe has been m the Police Fjrae at Home. Shaw is an old Indian sol Her, having a pension for long service, hearing a good character for honmfcv, but n.o doubt was led into his crime by love of drink. Up a Tiiee. — An accident of a ludicrous rather than a. seriom nature occurred m the evning of the Sports while, two individivil* were on the rctur.n journey. One, a pedestrian, was on ahead, closely followed by the other on horseback. The latter eviden'ly wished to. (ret to the frmt, and apparently the intention became known to the foot traveller, who turned completely t..> the side of t!ie roa:l to allow the hor<eman to piss. Js r o sooner had he djne so, however, than the other pulled the left rein, and the animal making a plunge came into collision with the pe-iestriun, and sent him spiMwl'mg into (.he side ditch. The ca.ii"P of the nccidpnfc politely n^fred the suff^r^r if he were hurt, and the sufferer just as courteously responded that he was not ; but there the noliteneis endei, find a volley of invective hurled at the equestrian, only elicito 1 the inquiry as why the swearer did n>t lo ik wheiv he was going. This was adding insult to injury with a vengeance, mi-l resulted m the information from that pirfcy that. " were he possessed of eve« m the back of lv« head, and ware he aware t'mt such a clumsy brute ware behind, he should have climbed a ti'ee so as to leave the whole breadth of the road clear." Finding, however, that he was too hc:ivilv weighted m the woi'dv warfare, the cause of the row had judiciously olapped spurs to his horse, and the sarcasm of his opponent was only bestowed upon the wind, the bush, and our infi.r. n>uit. The Famier-ston School Committee. — In answer t> the advertisement convening a meeting for the elect-ion of a school committee for the ensuing year, nine persons pit m nn appearance on Monday evening. When it ta stated that seven out of , the nine hud to be elected, it will be seen i that the selection partook very mrcih of the nature of " Ho'-son's choice." The apathy exhibited by the people of Palmerston a'wit such an unpjrtant matter is positively fthnmefu), and can only be accounted, for i np;>n the grounds that as the education of I their children costs them nothing, it is notworth n thought or a half hour's loss, of time. The, system adopted i.i the election, of the Committee wns that allowed by the Act. wherein one voter could e.i*e his seven vote* to one man -to the exclusion of the others, and we mn«t «ay that m a small meeting pnch as that of Monday night, the arrangement is one of the hollowest farces which' can well be imagined. By it any ope of the candidates could plmnp for himself, or tho most undesirable person, if he took the trouble to bring two or thrw ner-
srvns rietprmnind to give him thmr full support, could be placed at the bend of the poll, although otherwise he might not have the ghost of a chance of success. However, such is the Act, and as the law is written bo it must be administered. Nine candidates were proposed, and a ballot being taken, it renultit'.l m the following: — Messrs. Snelson Coleraan, Goodison, and Mackie the retiring members, and Messrs. Mitford, James and Diingan.
