DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.
We learn with regret that Mr. E. Charles; builder of Terrace End, met with a serious accident on New Year's Day, which will probably confine him to bed for some considerable time. From what we can learn of the unfortunate affair, Mr. Charles paid a visit to the Rangitikei Races on Thursday, and while standing in the grounds, about thirty or forty feet away from a shooting gallery upon the Course, he was shot down by a gun in the hands of a drunken individual who was amusing himself shooting. The bullet entered the fleshy part of his thigh, and with such a force that he fell to the ground, and a moment afterwards fainted from loss of blood and the shock. He was immediately afterwards removed from the grounds, and medical attendance having been summoned, the ball after much difficulty and pain was extracted. On the night of the accident he was so weak that it was not deemed advisable to remove him from the hotel at Bulls, where he now lies. If Mr. Lawrence was able to recover [illegible]mages from the Borough of Palmeron for injuries received by falling [illegible]r a piece of wood, it strikes us Mr. arles has a very excellent action against the Jockey Club, who no doubt, received a fee for permitting a dangerous game, without taking ordinary precaution for the safety of those from whom they exacted 'and entrace fee, and consequently should have been protected.
