THE CONTEST FOR THE MAYORALTY.

The election of the Chairmanship of the Borough Council came off on' Wednesday, and although the contest waa by no means a close one, Mr. Lin ton beating his opponent by two to one, still there was considerable excitement and interest evinced- m. the result. Mr. Coleman ran upon What is known a3 the !' Workingmen's ticket," or at least he was under the impression that he would have the support of that body, but m that he was apparently mistkkenrfor as-he; onlypolled 43 votes to his opponents 'B2, ; it was quite evident that the _workingmen did' not all accord him their support, The contest was carried on with the best feeling on both sides, not a word being said by either: candidates to hurt-the feelings of the other ; on ■the contrary, at the deplaratiph^pf the poll, after each had returned thanks both ahook hands heartily.' Some disgust Was'occasioned during the day by the sight of a donkey mounted m a cart,, and surrounded ,by two or three of the same specie's. The con- ' veyance was driven by an idotic looking in-, dividual rejoicing m the appropriate name of "Mosey" who with a semi-drunken wholly imbecile jabber was calling attention to the degrading exhibition he' was making' S>{ himself. Those who^ witnessed the dis? gusting procession drew comparisons between the four-footed donkey, and hiis, fel lows, very much to thd^tletriaient of the bi: peds. Some difficulty experienced to* fathom the meaning of .the procession, or 'account for the presence of the unfortunate animal, but we presume its owner 'being un-. able to put m an appearance sent a subatitude which would be a fitting representative. The contest is now at an end, and while we are convinced that the choice of the electors has fallen upon the best man, we are also sure that the new mayor will have no more willing assistant m developing the resources and watching the - town than his late opponent.
