mo THE BURGESSES OF PALMERSTON NORTH. Gentlemen, — In accordance with the wishes of an influential deputation which waited upoD me at the last moment, I consented to be nominated as a candidate for the office of Mayor, although my intention when the matter was first broached to me, was not to contest the election, but the fact of Mr. Jenssen declining to enter the field, and the repeated offers of support from various quarters induced me to accede to the request so frequently urged. I need scarcely add that should I be successful, my whole energies will be devoted to the promotion of your interests, as they have hitherto been, whilst occupying the position of Councillor for the last two years, and you may further rely upon my impartiality m seeing that justice is done to the Ratepayers m all parts of the Borough. I am aware that should I be elected, I shall appear at considerable disadvantage as a successor to Mr. Snelson, who has so admirably discharged his duties during the period of his Mayoralty, but I trust that my earnest endeavors will uiako up for any shortcomings. I do not see the necessity of calling you together to explain my views at length, as there are no questions of vital importance which affect the interests of the Borough, except those with which we are well acquainted, but should occasion arise, I should always be ready to elicit an expression of opinion from the Ratepayers at large, and explain my own views at.the same time.
