THE FEILDING CHRONICLE AND ADVERTISER. SATURDAY, NOV. 1, 1879. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Lectures.— On Tuesday evening the Her. Mi*. Dutton gave a lecture in the Primitive Methodist Church in aid of the. Building : Fund. On the following evening the reverend' gentleman gave another lecture at Halcombe, for a similar object. Both lectures were well attended. Earthquake. — The smartest shock of» earthquake, we have had for a considerable time was experienced here on Thursday morning .about half -past two o'clock. It was sufficiently sharp to rouse all but the heaviest sleepers from their slumbers. The direct appeared to be from north-east to south-west. Another Yictim.— On Tuesday evening, as the train leaving Ealcombe at 7.15 was on the way to Feilding, the engine-driver noticed a horse on the line galloping madly in the direction of the train. Before the train could be pulled up, the engine knocked the animal down, breaking its legs and frightfully mangling it. The poor brute was at once pu.t out of its misery, and the train proceeded after a shbrj; delay When will the line be fenced in ? Thb- Feilding Volunteers. — - The Manchester Rifles attended a Government parade on Tuesday evening, when they mustered in strong force. Sergeant-major Bezar put the corps through their drill, in the, square, and expressed, and expressed, in complimentary terms, satisfaction with the progress made. We hear that the ceremony of opening the Butts will take place on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, when a match—^Marrie.d «. Single — will be ■ contested. '' Thb Railway Traffic— We are glad to learn that <jhe, traffic on tjho, Railway is j steadily increasing. If it goes on at the same rate much longer, our station will have to be enlarged, as it has been found neeeisary at Marton. This, considering the amount of commercial depression at present ; existing, i$ reassuring. The line is much patronised, we. notice, by the o^ars of horses, a considerable number having been conveyed over it during the past few weeks. I Cricket. — We are gkd to note that our remarks about the. apathy hitherto displayed : by oar local cricketers have had the desired i effect. Thw Club has been re-organised and the first match of the Season will be ! played this afternoon, when sides selected ; on the ground, will contest for,, the palm of victory. We can only add that outsiders I not only wjll be welcomed, but are invited to be present. , A Hin.s to' Contractors. — We take, the ! liberty of- drawing the attention of contractors to, an advertisement of Mr. 0. Roe, | which appears in another column, respecting posts an.d house blocks, which he, has for sale. Undoing so we think we are doing cpntraptsqip an' essential service, as from persopal inspection, we can safely affirm that their: equal for substantiality can, rarely bft met with; an.dj.also, bpcauae they. Trill ]Qq, sold cheap, in order to close accounts. ■ Temperance Lecture.— -On Thursday evening, the. Rev. Mr Dutton delivered a Temperance, lecture, in the School-room, under the au,spjce? of the Mower of JFeilding Lodge, 1.0,Qi,T. The reverend gentleman chow, for his subject, "Drink; Its curse • and eur,p," wjijch lie handled in a very able manner. Sir William I-ox presided, and, we need not say, availed himielf of the op"
portunity to make some very trenchant remarks.. The. proceedings were enlivened by the singing of some Temperance Odes, rendered in capital style. The School-room was crowded many being unable to obtain admission. A RsAii Luxury. — Those who affect 1 real London natives cannot do better than remit three shillings, in stamps, to Mr. R. E. Cole, of Feilctiiig, whose oysters are fully equal to the ; veriesfc Whitstablea. For this small outlay.a picklo-bottle of delicious bivalves will be forwarded, thus doing away with the trouble of opening. This is the most economic way of purchasing these lnzuries. Mr. Cole's natives are the real Coraraandel rock oysters, equal in size and flavor to their London congeners. We are sure our frieads will thaWc us for giving them the hint.
