He ! has been working for some time at Carr and Cross' 1 mill, at Kiwitea, and left Brown's Hotel on Wednesday presumedly to return home. He has not been heard of since, and his mates are apprehensive of som,e evil having befallen him. Capsize. — -On Monday afternoon as Mr. Beards' man was driving round the town deliyering.'^ii'ated waters, the horse shied at . a barrow that was being whe.eJed along the road, and swerved into tha gutter. The. trap, was upset and damaged, ari,d the, loading scattered and brpkeu. 'I^e driver was thrown a, nonsidorable distance but escaped unhurt, as did alsp the horse. HopTiauLTtTßAi Show^ — It i« gratifying to lf>arn that the labcrs of the committee, who canvassed the district on behalf of the forthcoming Show haya been attended with
marlced success, and should the .weather prove at all favorable, the exhibit* — both m qunntity and quality — will come up to the desired standard. The committee have been successful also m inducing our townsmen to contribute special prizes, about a dozen of which will supplement the general prize list. Another Sawmill. — The erection of Messrs. West and Cooper's mill, at fche Government Bush, is progressing rapidly, twid the proprietors confidently expect k>; commence operations in'abput;' three weefes time. The shed is nearly fin!siiecl,'ancl the!'' only part of "the machinery ".not. on the ground is- the boiler, ■which is being converted into' a multi -tubular one. This will be placed m position m about a week or ten days. The branch line is new finished, the late fine weather having been favorable for ballasting operations. . The Early Train. — The early iJrain on Monday was very extensively patronised, Feilding supplying a pretty lavge contingent of passengers. The train left Palraerston a quarter of an hour before its time, and -arrived &. Feilding twenty miniite3 m advance. Here it was detained until the proper time of departure. And most fortunate it was, too, else a few would have missed seeing Wanganui until the evening Mr. Rotherham's courtesy m consulting their convfnience was a theme of congratulation among the numerous passengers. ■ The; Manchester Rtflks. — Our local corps of; Volunteers l»ad their first march out on Saturday afternoon, under Capthin Sherwill. The members of the corps musmustered m strong force. They were put through a variety of manoeuvres and exorcises m Manchester Square, by Colour-Ser-goant Blaekmote. After this they formed and marched down the Awahuri road for more; than a mile and a half, preceded by the Drum and Fife Band. Here they were "again put through the drill, after which they marched home. Though not m uniform, the. meu had a smart soldier-like bearing,' and created quite a ; flutter of ex* citemenfc a8 marched through the township/ ' .-■••■
