THE COMING MAN.
■-.^{y, yy. ..» It will be a matter ;f Or cohgratulatiohV amongst the Liberals-that.notjohly has Mr. Macandrew been unq, nimoiisly chosen Leader of. the Liberal party, but also that Sir George) Grey has grace fully, given way to the choice of. the people. A meeting of the supporters of the late Government wii held,on Eriday, and at it the question arose as to the desirability of having, a. new leader, as Sii G6brge Grey coiald not command a majority ; while it, was pointed out that the member for Port Chalmers could command several votes, and : if the.partywere united they' would- beat oUce able to carry the 'VNo "cphfidence '' motion. Sir George thereupon assured those present that he, had no diflEJeulty iii making up his mind, and read the following telegram, which' he had received from the Thames :\f~' : ■■■ The Cpmmitte'e of the Thames Liberal Association, desire, tpVeiprees theip regret that -^igeae'ies oi dituafcion ''have fcendei'ed it : neoessary for' you tb'^resign lea'derßhip of Liberal pafty'W';Mß.piiiia_andre^r, :: 'but they will continue to support you m any case, or., anyone else youjmayi think it wise to.recommend, and trust .thai Gj-od will' Spare you a long and happy life to see your measures carried gut. In j.resigning the leadership into . the; hands of Mr, Macandrew, the; late .Bremier. frefely acknowledged that he. w;as aware that the resolution •yvhich ousted the Government had kjeen levelled at himself. 1^ With that opinion weVcorr dially agree, and vvhile we freely admit that he/is the master of every poiiticiari: m jthe House m "ability and Constitutional knowledge, he jhas also defects of temper which rigidly debar him from a place m the Cabinet. In debate Sir George will befound'an invaluable ally, and his voice prove a tower of "strength to bis party; but now'that he has resigned the command., we trust never to see him .resumed/it V again. This voluntary resignation, although decidedly the oniy hope -for the party, will he the means of raising him m the estimation of those" who have sO long beheld with igrief the false position which he persisted m maintaining. It certainly is hard to see the old veteran reduced 'to the ranks, but he will make a good soldier instead of a bad general..
