THE TIMBER DUTY.
Wb were iuformed the other day by a gentleman from Wellington, that two fine vessels had recently arrived m Port Nicholson from America, within two or three weeks of each other with large cargoes of timber. This would seem to indicate, as we suggested, that the American timber trade with this colony was only m its infancy at the date of the last returns, and shows us pretty plainly, what we have to expect as that trade, becomes developed. In addition, to- sawn ' timber these vessels brought over a large quantity of doors, sashes, kc, so that other industries beside that of -saw- milling are, doomed to competition with-the cheap labor productions of America. Free trade may be all very* ■ well, but we maintain that it is mani- ■ festly unfair tp expect an infant to t walk at once without support. We H have all enjoyed the benefit of a helping 5 hand at this critical stage, and why [ should not a^ young colony?. '"' " '
