It is stated at Hawera that a large number of Maoris are now at Parihaka, and that several are^dying daily there. One day as many as fifteen ; died from various diseases. .The huts are reported to be over-run with lice and verminV The Natives on the plains are busy fencing and cropping land m the vicinity of Waingongora Bridge, but there is no pretence at fortification of any sort.
