NEWS AND NOTES

Thb ErBNTPUi Dat. — From an official notice elsewhere it will be seen toat the nomination day has been fixfld for this day week, and the day of poll this day fortnight. .;,;:*. ;: „. , . ' . Anothse . Feilu-dat.— -Thursday being the usual fortnightly court-day there was a perfect muster of litigants. O wipg, how • ever, to amount of space demanded by that all'; absorbing topic— the Elections, we are obliged toi hold, over our. report. L Elbotobal.— -Through the courtesy of Mr. Boss, the Eetiirning Officer, we have received a few copies of the new roll, which can be obtained at the usual price, six shillings. Aniearly application is necessatiy; y\:X<-. L-. -*'LL : ■ '- a Mb. j Snelson's PbogbA-Mmb. — It will be seen that Mr. Snelson will address the electors of Stoney Creek on Monday, Taonui on Wednesday, and Sanson on Friday, the particulars of place and hours being stated m bur advertising columns. An Eva. Rem:*bdkx>.—- We are pleaded to learn from tbe Magistrate that he had received authority from the Government for the appointment of bailiffs to the several Courts within his circuit. The Belcct iors have not as yet been made, but delay has only been occasioned pending arrangement}' with regard to the salaries of the va.iinus officials. The drawback of having no duly-appointed bailiff for the service of summonses and distress warrants, is one tbat ban been very seriously felt for some t'_e, and thate -who have been mcouyen ; enc«d hitherto by the want will, be glad to lear_ that the evil will no longer exist. Town iMPßOVEksNTfi.— Taking advantage of the splendid weather which bai been experienced during the past few days, Mr. Bambnry, the contractor for the Royal Hotel, has been pushing on the work,'and the building has made rapid strides towards completion. , Now,.t_at the whole . of the. framework is m position, some estimate can be made of the magnitude of the erection, which will be one of the largest hotels on tbe Wast .Coast: Mr. Batchelar is most aixious to have the extension completed, ai the necessities of his, growing trade require more accommodation. The Candidates at Palmebston.— \% may appear somewhat strange that we have not given tha addresses m. Palmerston of el: her Mr- Snelson br. Mr. Johnston, but we may efcateTthat oqr- reason for the uou^se is that as we have fuhy reported both candidates, at Feilding and Foxton, the palmerston speeches would 'consequently be mere repetition. . . At Mr. Snelson's meeting ! oa Wednesday night, the enly featura of j novelty was Mr. M'Donald's reason (?) why |be could liot support Mr. Snelson. To our mind the explanation was not satisfactory, bnfc those, who fwere not*, present will be able to judge for themselves after reading our leader upon the subject. Mr. Johnston held forth on Thursday night, and received a patient hearing, any interruption which took place being of a good-humored nature, equally enjoyed by candidate and electors. At its conclusion, a vote ot thauks was moved, but some individual — whose identity we could not discover — suddenly bobbed up and then bobbed down ngain, the words " amendment," " confidence " and "Johnston" being heard afc intervals. The admirer of Mr. Johnston, however, 1 was evidently ashamed of the pirfr he was taking, as he kept, clear qf the platform, and the amendment fell to the ground for want of a seconder. Apropos ot elections, we .hear that Mr. Halcombe got a very fair reception' at both Otaki and Foxton, at which latter place he declared that he would oppose the division of the county, a point upon which all three candidates aae agreed.
