NEWS AND NOTES
Mb, Johnston tn the "FietiT). — At a late hour, last evening, Mr. Johnston's address to the electors was left at our office. It appears elsewhere. Th 3 Catholic Church. — W« hare boon requested to remind our Catholic fviends that to-morrow, being the third Sunday, tho usual monthly Mass and devotions will be held m St. Patrick's Church. The Workinomeit's Dkawattc Clttb. — We understand thnt the Workingmen's Club have now "Lute tho Laborer "m rehearsal, nnd at an early date at will be pres«ntftfl, the proceeds upon t-hef occasion to be divided between the Hospital and Cemetery Funds. Gone over to tbtr Majority. — Our old friend Mr. James Nelson Owen, late of this town, appears to hare been affected by the tidal ware of affliction which has engulphed so many persons m business. From the Wellington papers w» learn that ho has called a meeting of his creditors. Thb Five Millions Loan. — We learn from a private telegram from Wellington that upon the passing of the Loan Bill having been telegraphed to Sir Julius Yogel, a reply was received to the effect that no difficulty is likely to be experienced m floating tho new loan, and that any amount required m anticipation of the loan being placed regularly on the monej market, can be readily obtained. An Eye-sobb and a Snabts.— We toot very great pleasur* m complimenting the Public Works Department upon the very creditnble manner m which they have carried out the works at the Square. We regret, then, that at their completion we should feel called unan to find fault with it, but certainly the unsightly barricada which they have erected m the very centre of fhe street is an annoying eye-sore by day, and dangerous man-trap by night. We might forgive the unsightliness of the obstruction, but decidedly unless a lamp be erected over the impediment to warn the unwary, some fatal accident will be the result. Last Wednesdays Meeting. — The meeting held last Wednesday m tho Town Hall, was one of which Palmerston has good reason to be proud. As is well known, Mr. Halcomba is by no means liked m ■fchis town, nnd. veb the large audianee which assembled, if they did not applaud, gave him a most patient and attentive hearing during the whole course of his very lengthy address. Although, of course, our he.irtiest support will bo given to the Libaral Candidate, Mr. Snelson, we have given Mr. Hnlcombe's speech verbatim, as we wish the struggle to be fought out fairly and honestly between the two candidates. Wooixo the Electors. — It will bo seen that tho two candidates m the field — for so fa.™, Mr. Johnston has been neither seen nor heard of m the Upper district — hare lost no time m mounting the stump. Mr. Snelson will adflve?s the electors of Foxton on Monday : Feilding, on Tuesday ; Palmerston, on Wednesday ; and Halcombe and Sanson, on dates to be named hereafter. Mr. Halcombe addresses tho Feildingites to-night, anr\ Halcombe on Monday night, nnd we believe, although we are not sure of the feet, Foxton on Thursday night. Land Tax Appeal Court. — The Resident Magistrate presided yesterday m the 0om?t House, to hear objections to the various Land Tax assessments. Mr. Charles Crombie, the Deputy Commissioner, arrived m town on Thursday evening, and of course afted officially during the proceedings. Tfasterrtay was devoted to hearing objections from Feilcling, bub owing to tho fact that the Court was nat opened until after noon, very little progress was made. To-day, if possible, appeals from the immediate neighborhood of Palmerston will be heard. The Blind Goddess Turns Deaf. — Thar* is a dead-locic m the Temple of .Justice, and the unfortunate suitors at its doors at Palm«rston havo appealed for a hfaring m vain. The police officer has received instructions from his superior to sorve no more summonses — an oi'der with which we entirely agr.RG — and as thoro is no duly appointed bailiff, the consequence is that there is a perfect mas.* of summonses awaiting service without thevo being the slightest chance of it. The Resident Magistrate at a recent Court at FeiHing volunteered the information that bailiffs had been "appointed to all the courts on this Coast. If there be truth m the statement, as we presume there is, w<j certainly think it |is Mr. Ward's duty to have the official appointed to Palmerston despatched to Mb duties at once.
