DETERMINED ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.
The prisoner Derritt, who was remanded upon the change of larceny, made a desperate attempt to hang himself yesterday afternoon. Shortly after dinner the attention of Mrs. G-illespie was attracted by a jumping sound m the lock-up, as if somo one was struggling violently, upon going to the door and looking at the railing over the cell door, she noticed a handkerchief tied, and suspecting that something was wrong, Bhe immediately gave the alarm. In a moment the Constable rushed from the Court and upon opening the door, found Derritt with his oat, boots, and neckerchief oftSj a handkerchief fastened to the grating, to which a. pair of strong leather bootlaces were attached. The prisoner was gasping and trembling as if with the ague, but upon being taxed with attempting to strangle himsglf, he would not utter a word. Fearing that he might compass his design if l«lt alone, or at least dp himself some harm, he wisely remoyed him in^io, the : cell with Thompson, ;i,whp is imprisoned for horse stealing. .. „ \..,.. >
