We are pleased to see that the, desire to, push ahead the Public Library has not been lost sight of or died out, and move particularly that the matter has an interest for our country settlers. We have received a choice assortment of books from Mr. Viggo Monrad, of Karere, and Mr. Kebbelwhite of this town. Independently of tlie intrinsic value of. the works presented, the volumes contributed by Mr. Monrad, have a history attached to them which will make them an interesting souvenir of an eventful period m the past of Manawatu. As is well known, Mr. Monrad is one of the oldest settlers m tlie. county, and about twelve years ago the. Natives m the vicinity of Karere werp'not quite so reconciled to the influx of Europeans as they are at presents It was rumored that a party of Hau Haus had visited the neighborhood with the view of exterminating the white settlers, and acting. upon advice Mr. Monrad abandoned his house, and betook himself and family lower down to a nl-ace of greater, safety. Most of'the household effects were left behind, but possessing a large and valuable library, containing works brought from Europe, before his desertion of his home Mr. Monrad ha&.his,hpok;\p.h' , e I d. m h«ces and huriel, so t-hH m the event of an attack andthe burning of the homestead those prized treasures would be saved from the wreck. 4 considerable portion of the donation
