Present-^-CounciUors Maearthur (County Chairman), Carr, Sanson, Haloombe, Loudon, RockstroV, Kebbell, and Gower. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. correspondence. The Chairman read the following correspondence :—• APOLOGY. - Letter at apology for absence was read from Councillor Linton. — Leavo of absence granted. . POrND-KEEPER. . Letter from Councillors Rockstrow arid Gower, asking Council; to appoint Mr. G. Cook pound^keeper.— Agreed to. ' V "A*WABUNI DBAIN. Letter from the Hutt County Council andthe Palmerston and Wanganui Borough Councils, t6- the sahie effect. . r Letter from the Secretary of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, stating that, the resolution passed at the last meeting of the Council would. ;be laid before the Chamber at its next meeting. Letter fro m Wanganui County Council, enclosing the. following resolution, passed at , its last meeting :—" That this Council cannot see their, vifay to assist m bringing pressure on the Government m the .present financial state of the country, more .especially as m all probability L>=a- railway wouldshortly supply the whole. •■•'..- OiABITABLE AID. ' " , Letter from" the Rev. J". M William, thanking the Council for its allowance of seven shillings per week to Grace Clark; and- asking aid for an aged invalid- ap' Otaki, named May. '■•''■ : ' j Resolved, on the motion of Councillor Kebbell— "That the* allowance granted, by resolution of this Council; to Grace 'Clark, of seven shillings aud sixpence per week, be reduced to five shillings per week, ; the reduction to; date from *lsfc July, 1879, the same to continue m force during the pleasure of the; Council." It was also resolved— " That a sum of five shillings per week be paid to John May, of Otaki, from Ist July instant, and to continue" during tli ci pleasure of this Council. -The same to be paid through the Rev. J. MWilliam." ; ; MB. TO Y's LICENSE. Letter from- the V Resident Magistrate^ acknowledging receipt of resolution parsed at the X last 'meeting of the Council re refusing of license to Mr. Udy, aiid intimating; that application had been made by- Mr. *.■*■ Udy for the -same, but the Bench 'had declined to entertain Or consider the same. MAINTENANCE OP ROADS. Letters from the West Wairarapa Coun^ cil^reimainteiiance of road through the Seventy- mile Bush. ; Telegram from same requesting Council to apipoint a president m Wellington to represent the Council on a deputation to the Minister of Public Works re maintenance of Gorge Road.— -The Council . had asked Wi Johnstone; ; Esq.i M.H.R., to represent them on the deputation, i Telegram from* W. copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Government and the members for the district, and that a circular letter be addressed to the the various County Councils m the Colony, requesting their co-operation." Councillor Halcombe said he was prepared to assist m advocating a fairly stringent measure for restricting the immigration of Chinese, but thought it would be impolitic to exclude them altogether. He moved — ''That this Council is prepared to co-operate with the Maniototo County Council m pressing the Government to take measures to prevent the further influx of Chinese into the Colony." — Carried. • CREDITS. Letters from the Treasury, intimating that the sum of £20 had. been remittted to the credit of the Council fpr shifting site of the Oroua cart bridge ; also, the sum of £6 10s. for half share of cost of deepening and clearing out the* Awnpuni drain. OHAU "PUNT. Letter from the "Under-Secretary for Public Works, correcting certain misappre hension of the Council with regard to the Ohau Punt and Ferry. BEPUIfD BBQTXBSTBD. Letter from the . Palmerston Borough Council, requesting the refund of £40 paid to the Council for licenses within the Borough. THB BEAOH BOAD. v Letter from' certain Natives re Beach road, stating that having been requested to fence m their property, through which the road ran, they would be compelled to erect a gate across the road.' OTAKI -FBBBT BEBEBVE. Letter from the Trust Commission, returning copy of agreement to lease the Ferry Reserve at Otaki, for an endorsement of a short statement, m Maori, of its contents. KIMBOI.TOW BOAD. Letter from Mr. T. Bradley, tha contractor, requesting half payment for Con-, tract No. 1. Kimbolton road, and stating that he had been unable to complete his contract owing to. the wet weather." He ■] had, however, rendered the road passable, and would complete his contract m the spring. ' ' > :, Councillor Cabb moved — "That the sum of £150 be paid to T. Bradley, bis deposit returned and fine remitted, on condition that he places a man on the road to keep it repair over the whole Jength of , his contract, until auch time as He' completes the work. ' ; ; Councillor HA"LOOKBE,"in seconding .the motion, observed that it was entirely Bradley's own fault that he had not completed his contract within the time. Ho had, however, been sufficiently punished already by the enormous expense to which he had been put. While supporting the; m'Qj-ib.h,-Jie wished to/express himself very^strongly as to the necessity 'of punishing contractors for breach of contract. The resolution was carried. THE NEW. HOSPITAL. Letter from the Wanganui Borough Counoil, stating that the plans for the hospital were now ready, and inviting delegates from the various contributing governing bodies to meet at the Council office on Monday, 14th instant. , BLAUGHTBBING MOBNBES.' .Letter from H. H. Swannage, applying for a slaughtering license for small cattle at a reduced rate. Resolved, on the motion of Sanson — "That,, m the opinion of this Council, it would not be advisable to.isßue licenses at reduced rates to persons intending to slaughter small cattle only." :
