Heid Over.— ln order to clear off an accumulation of standing matter, we arc compelled to omit our leading article. " Erratum.— -We wish to correct * stupid blunder which appeared m our repwfc of the case i Knowlea v7Deardi. It/wju made to appear *■ if the judgment had been given for plaintiff, whereas it should have been for the defendant. The context, however, showed plainly that, the blunder was a typographies-, one. - An Explanation. —We would wish to explain to oiir rodders that our remarks i a tost issue were by no means intended to reflect upon the present statioh-maßter at Foxton, who we are pleased to learn is jiist as civil and . obliging, as his predecessor — the ptr-on alluded to — was th* reverse. Corpus Christi. — To-m'orvow, being tlie Feast of Corpus Christi; Mass will be celebrated m; Sti Patrick's* Church, Palmerstcn, a t,seven. o'clock,!! ri i order that the rev. /.pastor my proceed hy the train to Feilding, where the Holy Sacrifice, will be offered up at eleren. -As next Sunday will be the third Sunday of the mouth, Mass will be celebrated afc Palmerston, arid 'Holy Benediction as usual m the evening. -Tib Pawie-jsion Soaodi,.— We are pleased to see that the additions to the Palmerston Public School are being pushed rapidly ahpad, M essrs.. Daniels and Sutton losing no time with their contract." I When the alterations are completed, which they willbe In a short time/the Master* a,nd Mistress, Mr. apd Mrs. Watson, will h^ve considerably more.space at command for the convenience ;of the large number of scholarwhich are now attending the achool. Tns District Court!— The Palmevstori' District Court was formally opened at noon on Saturday by the Clerk, Mr. Forster. For the • reason which we published m a, former issue there was no business, but we understand the members of the Bar' were anxious to. confer with the Judge with a view of getting some of the business initiated m the \yangariui Court, finishedup here. As Mr.- Schaw -willpay his first oflU-ial visit to "Palmerstbri to-day^ it is m>re than possible that'iriatter-wiUV be brought under his notice." . ' Painfot. Accident.-^- Wi* regret to hear that Mr. Slade, one of the contractors for the erection .of' Mr. Cooper's residence, Rangitikei Line, met with, a most painful accident, while working; at,tlie. building on Mooday morning. It appears lie was underneath a scaffold ,when a /carpenter's chisel felhfrom above, and falling with' the edge ofl.his arm, cut/:through his coat, shirt, and flannel, infiieting a frightful gash on the limb. He immediately came into town and had the injury attended to, but we regret to say it is of such a nature as will, keep hjm f rom work for a considerable time. That Hundred Thousand- Sleepers. — Although we do not know exactly how much of the hundred thousand sleepers have been contracted for m this district, judging from the number of stacks lying alongside the line leading to the Btilmerston station, np inconsiderable portion lias been supplied by the ijpp.er Manawatu. The sleeper- seem splendid specimens,, , and: we should "imagine that Mr. Campbell, ! the officer engaged m the work of examining and . fiassing'for the Department, would have ittle canse. for complaint / ' . | T,Hps GBORMAa-— These Sable Minstreh made their second a.ppe*r*nee m Palmer_ton | on Saturday, the hou*e, if poseihlej being more crowded/ than on the former occasion, arid, they have thu« the honopof proving the first eotnp.vaywhieh has filled the hall two nights m succession; The programme was v complete change from beginning to end— a. pleasing introduction into it being the chwefcexistio dance by Hose* Easton of "The Essence of 01*. Virgiriny," which as a specimen of that peculiar class of saltatory inotton, wiU unsurpassed. , The jojkei and puns were varied V*nd original, while; theY ,""*hph> en" ? oruiinment;/Vwi^i; ..irresistibly amusiof ,■ without there hethg feh> thibgtootfend ih§ moat" fastidious. ;
— We need scarcely remind our readers that thelong-looked-forwtrd- to treat from Sir William Fox takes place to-night, whan the reteran colonist will give his " Experiences m America." Those who hart not taken the precaution to be provided with tickets befove-hand should rectify!' the omission as far as possible by putting m an early appearance, as judging from the number of seats already scoured, those who study their comfort should take that step. Notwithstanding the great attraction, however, we notice that the prices of admission are two shillings and one. Th;e Besetti:n<3- Sin.— Yestenlay Joseph Hart was brought up before H. McNe'd, Esq. J.P., charged w<fch having" been dmok and disorderly the right previous. .It appealed from thevevidence that he presented himself m the drill-room while the 'volunteers where at drill and conducted himse^ m such a disorderly manner that Captain Snelson was compelled to have him locked up. The accused said he was very sovry for what had oocu-"ed. Sor.ie year 3 ago he had been wounded ia the head and when re took a drop it . endered him ir^ens'b'e. He hoj;ed his Worship woulf' deal leniently with him, and promised to tale tre pledge. He was fined 10/, or 48 hours' imprisonment. The Public Lxhk>et. — We are pleased to see that the lending lib- a 7 is be'*?g largely taken advantage of by subscriber, the n p mbev of vol umes taken out showing how the institution is npiynruated. At tilth c sitting of the Bo^oi'gh Council, held on Safcu "day, that body aupoinied the follow'/^ "gentlemen to act as the Lib-ay Committee under the Act — Messrs. Mil fo.-d, Ferguson, Coleman, Dimond, T. King, Wi-ay Greei, R. Lea •*, and Dungan. A meeting, therefore, of the latte- will be held on Thn-sday eveninz, to consider the acceptance ofthe position, and to appoint a chai -man m liea of the President, whose office, of ...ourse, has now become defunct. The Bovough Council resolved that the rate to be levied shoulo. be one penny m the £ nnd it will ne-fcresfc with the committee to fix the sam per yea? for subscript inns. BBEACHES OF THE BOEOOGH BrELAWS. — Constable Gillespie laid info m<w'ons. under the 28ch Cause of <;he Bo:*oug!i BreKws, against the following peiaons fo>.* allowing their horse.? to wander over the Sqtia^e : — Samuel Davey, Samuel Lane, George M'Gvthy, Edwai'd Collins, John Gibbon, and Thomas Moffatt. Tlie ci^s we'*e liea-d on Monday mo-ning, befo.e the Mayor, and a penalty was m flicied. Samuel Davey, fined one shilling and seven shillings costs"; Samuel Lane (who did not appear) fined te;i shillings and seven shillings cosi3 ; George M'CAHliy, (no opnea?Mnoe) fined ten 'shillings and -costs'; Edward Col 1 ins, appearance) fined ten shillings anil seven shillings costo ; John Gibbon, fined one '"shflmg and seven shillings costs ; Thomas Moffatt, fined one shilling and seven shillings costs.. Deaeps' Hotel. — We have to re n led our readers m Feilding anc* Foxton, ps well as m Pal melton, that Deards Hotel, Ter-ace End, will be sabmitted foe sale ' by Mr. Snelson to-morrow. To those m the immediate vicinity it is unneccespn.y to dilate upon tl^e merits of such an investment, but for the information of those at a distance we may s'-ate that there is a safe £1500 a-year.to be made by an energetic businessman. As we staled m a previous issue, it 's Mr. Deaeds' "'ntention to deroto the whole of his care and attention to ihe other ind ust-v which he is at present ca Tying on, and that is the sole reason why he hali put the conce.-n into the mavket. . The Catholic Chctkcu. — The Rev. Father Moreau received -a letter f.-oni his Lordship Bishop Redwood, on Monaay, announcing the a.-rival ; n Wellington of a Polish priest. The rev. gentleman is one of those dr,iven from his diocese by the German Chanceller Bisma-ck, and m the future will be unrle" tho charge of Dr. Redwood. The letter further intimates that the Rev. Father will arrive m Manawatu m a few days, when a Jubilee m honor of the accession ofj tlie Leo XIII. to •the. Chair of St. Peter will be held. The Jubilee devotions commenced m this diocese the first of the current month, pnd will end with the closo of July. As there are a number of Poles and Germans m the Manawatu, no doubt they will hail with joy the advent of one who will be able to adminster the Sacraments of their Church m their own language. We have not heard the name of the elegy man, but we learn that/after a short sojourn m this district he will again romovo, so as to give other dist 'u:ts the benefit of his ministrations. " iNGRATITrDE WOESE THAN WITCHOKAPT."—It is said that the sin of ingratitude is worse than witchcraft," and if so Mr. George Knowles must be a Tory bad character indeed, for a gentUman possessed of a greater quantity of the former cornmod'* v, it has rarely been oa" lot to mtet. The-.fellow called .tipon Mr. Deards when— as bo himself pertinently put it— he was '• dead broke," with a whining request, to be supolied with drink. The landlord refused to give him any, but offered work instead, took the man into the house, and learning that IVe was a carpenter bought hiiii tools, whioh upon his statement that he could obtain work elsewhere, he allowed him to take away, upon the understanding that he.^yas to pay for them by degvees. Most J'rheti; would have felt I hankfnl for shch "yer^ considerate kindness, but Mr. Eindwles was made of different 'stuff, and actually retaliated by suing his benefactor for an itnaginarv wage which he claimed. Although the Bench very qnicklvsaw through the shallowness of the claim and dismissed the case, tho scoundrel is 'still possessed of the tools, so" generoasly provided for Win, and it is more than likoly Mr. Deards may go whistle for payment. Aghtate ! Agitate ! ! Agitate ! ! ! — Our townsfolk will remember a most succesfiil"public meeting which was held m the town Hall, ar. which seven resolutions were Passed, asking for the granting of seven different concessions. A Wellington contemporary, which was inclined to be satirical, ridiculed the modesty of the resolutionists, and alluded to the requests m the don't- you - wish - you -may-get- them style, sneeringly remarking that the Palmerston people evidently believed m the maxim, "Ask, and yon shall receive." Perhaps the scoffing sceptic would be surprised to hear that since then every single item forming the seven resolutions ha. been obtained , and consequently we are again determined to test the accuracy of the saying. There are three^things upon which certainly agitation is required: —First, thegross inadequacy of the post office; secondly, the admitted want of a proper building for a District Court ; an 1 thirdly the shameful appearance of the Railway Statjon. Touching the first mutter, all that is necessary is to n waken the Department. fromVfche lethargic slumber- into which, it has Fallen, m order that it" may carry out the promise made by Mr. tyTaaandrew on his rodent visit. ,The second is pne m which we "rcuike no doubt Judge Schaw will iniereit himself ; while the third is au dyesore to the town and a disgrace to thS Public Works '.■ Department. "God helps thoso that help 'fcheTnelve?," and as the very l.iuda'ble energy exhibited by the ratepayers m the past dias been so amply rewarded, we certainly, t]iink,ifc is. well wot th while to repeat'the experiment. ; Pai'liarnent will soon be iv sewion, and where so much is required, we cannot do any wrong m taking time by the forelock, aud pressing i our wants upon the attention of bur repre- | *satatiT«'«_4^ yM i%mim^-''x.
