THE "EARLY CLOSING" MOVE"MENT IN FEILDING.
/•■... TO^THK EDITOR. "" - Slß,^ You nlay remember some time* since the storekeepers' assistants of Feilding got up a movement having for its object tb*< earlier . closing of their respective p sjtorels.V, Tbey-.gqt^ circulars printed ana oircula&d amongst 'fbeir customers, and bills pp<ted v : through th»~ town, informing the public* ... that all Stores would close at seven o'clock from the Ist of .April. One would naturally haw -expected to see. tne stores closed »*: the .hour mentioned, but oh the contrary, you may still' see them, open till near nine p'clocfc iSSfil wty "is, thfis ? Simply because the proprietor refns© to =close until they think fit themselves. It is an old saying thit "a man can do as he likes with his own," and the, Feilding storekeepers mean to lit us know m earnest that they mean to <lo' as they like, even at the cost of wearing their assistants into disease and death. I think it well to remind the .Feilding storekeepers' that 'm keeping .their assistants .standing jiebjftd, tihe^.. counter from eight jo'tiUxw m" .tlie inorriin'g till near nine at night, is a ape^tes* of slarery which I am *Bure 'ajll right-thinking people will condemn; §jme of these fltorekeepers put up to be religious men ! Away w-ith suoh religion. !•«,. it religion JtP work a man's, life away by inches ? Is it religi >us to drive their assistants, as if jbhey C9uld not get enough" work ont'bf' them?' Did'the 'aisistaat* a*k J too much when they wanted to be Telexed from business at seven o'clock ? If these slave-driving and avaricious storekeepers will not take a fair day's >work, then. I say, . wa'ce them take it. H<>w ? Let the public ■ ow the r r sympathy with the- assistants m refusing to deal with any of the storekeepers except those wh6 close at the aforesaid hour. It is quite* enough I ,' Sir,' ton look at .any of these young metft«: sp^ that their lives are being worn «fway from overwork. By getting loose fronr business at seven o'clock they might yet gradually regain that "atrengi i which they hid lost. '^Hoping)t;hat liie good people of Feilding will see their .^ray to |)ttr->hi's^' ; only - 'the* wtrly-closing stores, and thereby show prafctieilbre^ym- ' jaathy with the p^e^yfcrlwd assistants re--.mjain., 4c., •■■"-' :; 'I;-' .'•■ A STMPATH^BBB. -. ■!.
