OUR CITY FATHERS.
TO THE.EDITOB. Slßjr-I. noticed at a late meeting of the Council th'eit Mr: Manson had tendered his resignation, but had been prevailed upon to withdraw it. Might I enquire, who was or were the party or parties who took upon themselves such a liberty, and what might be the: reason for the step. There is no resident of the town whom 1 respect more than Mr. Peter Manson, nor no one regrets riiore than I do the reason which necessetates his absence ; still, the fact remains that the business of the Corporation i losing the services of one Councillor, a 8 Jbngas Councillor Manson elects to' hold 9 bllice. 1 certainly think that under the circumstance, I capnot be accused of bad taste m hinting to that gentleman that he should resign an office the duties of which he is evidently unable to attend to. Then, again, there 'is another member who has sold the m his property m the Boi ough, and consequently, T believe is ineligible.— l &m, &c., Taokui. [With regard to the first query put by our correspondent, we' believe the Council as»a body is responsible for the Act. In reference to the second question, it wp,s generally though that as Councillor Manson would have to retire m September, it would scarcely be worth, his while tb'forestalthat action by resigning. However, from what we know of Councillor Manscn we feel quite convinced that if it were the wish of the ; ratepayers*- that he should give, way to a successor, he would have very little ho'itation m complying. As, however, " one swallow doo3 not make a summer," so the expressed wishes of " Taonui " can scarcely, be thought those of the whole Borough. We presume the second Councillor alluded is Councillor Walton, but we can inform our correspondent thafi although that gentleman has removed to about five miles' distance from town, there is no member of the Council more punctual m his attendance than he is. We are not aware that Councillor Walton has parted with all' his property m the town, but even had such beeri' the case, and the action would make ■ • him ineligible for representation, it is neither graceful nor grateful to be so ready to replace one Who has served se.well m the.Corineil.— Ed.
