RAILWAY SIDING AT AKITIHUNA.
TO T^B EDITOB. As the larger part of us, your correspondents who tend letters for publication, oftentimes consist of various grievance* or civil growls, m this I've the good fortune to deviate, and to convey to jour paper and the general manager, Mr. Rotheram, the courteous thanks of the settler* residing m the district for the Akitihuna siding. Though long delayed, it is at last appearing m a finished state ; but there exist doubts as to its being of use for crops this year. However, the following lines may cause a difference of opinion regarding this letter, I Tia. :— Mr. Rotheraru, waiving aIL party 1 . feeling and prejudices to the necessity of a siding for i.|itihunft, visited the districfc;in j person, and'was perfectly satisfitd 'with the . (hen growing crops and the future'resources of the place, and the assurance of the settlers that they could extend their crops - to four-fold, he felt satisfied to give his | recommendation to aid us, and remarking it was alvraya a pleasant duty for him to foater' an, industry that wolud keep good thie reputation of the Wanganui and Mnnawatu Railway.. X must here remark that the siding haa assumed a work of, far greater magnitude than was expected, and hope we shalL.not.be taunted, with, the doubta of a few as useless., I should nojs have commented so- much on Mr. Rotheram only for his predecessors, who would hare, instead) of hearing or reasoning, told us all to. go, to, church or some other far away place.. It has been said that if th» wheat had yielded as well as was expeoted. th# grow.en, with other produce, could have- weighted the floor of the shed with 300 tons. As yet the yield per acre is unknown, as. the greater part is. still m the stacks ; and knowing the' finest breakwater m the world was begun' by a single stone, we may, retaining your interest, and as more clearings are added to the world's, welfare, we hope to see the last siding erected, if properly reported,, to, pay a bonus that, will cause neither the manager, Mr. Rotheram, or our friends m Palmeraton, who numerously signed our memorial for the siding, to regret \ and m conclusion thanking them, and pro, tern., s Spot. Karere, Manawatu, Eobruary 26.
