Thepianof the battle arranged m the Southern camp was slightly changed for the nonce ; but to then* dismay when they wished to take up the ground they had relinquished, they found the enemy so firmly intrenched that they were fain to withdraw^ leaving them m possession of the battle-field. If, with its superior numbers, not to have gained a victory .was defeat, then the South certainly has experienced one;
