"Tscok:SisTEifi3ir, thy name is GrOWBR J" These were the words of one ; who cvi. :dently knew the 'member for Kawa Kawa, and a perusal of the mass of verbiage ejected from that rery flatulent gentleman at the Sandon meeting iwould coiifirm' ratl?er than dispel the impression. Wei quote the utterances . of !th'e abbve-named gentlemin, as he is evidently looked upon as the Demos:¥HßXXiß'pf jiiis party, the 1 speakers who "follow being merely chorus, singers who are^permitted to join m 'the- refrain. Mn Go WB« is certainly gifted" with thg ; gif b of bratory^^of a certiiin.kmd-^but Mr.' 'Gowbb is no sticker ■ afc trifles, and . so. that he can present a sweetly-scented boquet to greet the nasal organs of his audience he is not particular as to whose garden;. he plunders for. Jiis. flowers. There is a story H^lil of a certain lawyer who made almost eloquent speech, producing conyipcing arguments which quite carried &way judge and jury, but was astounded to learn at its Conclusion that he had gaiiveci the case for the opposite* side. A rid. this m- exactly whafc Mr. JoHx' GdWEE did* at Sandon. He went into the subiiraity of his eloquence about be hundreds of thousands t-TjtTrorcjr-ann^neTTntnjpnsr bf r pbuhd«i" .reprenehted ; but would- it ? be beliered that all the while this enchanting panorama.>was unfoldedyit. was -of that very j country through which the line to Fitzherbert is to be brought ? It not, where is it P for from the very centre of Phka to the boundary of Sandon, you ca.n look lin vain fur a stitrk of timber ! He says, again and again, ."they could not- dicj tate to the Government where the line was to go," yet m the face of the assertion' we -find the following resolution carried almost unanimously : — "That m the opinion of this meeting it is exceedingly desirable that the- work of forming the Wellington line should be commenced at the Foxtori end/ How nowj Mr/JoH» Gowe^? Surely your first assertion was absolutely false and tittered .as a blind, or you mu§t have inoculated your followers with your own inconsistency. The conduct is charac...^s^'c,;^and^reminds^us. very forcibly of tlie pipus young gentleman whpbping thwarted by his parents .m: the choice ; of a wife, aljiyays finished his prayers m the fbilbwing spirit of resignation : "Tliy will be done, 6 Lord, but be sure and give me Betty." Again, Mr. Gowbr says : ( " If the railway were formed, via Fpxton, .the isawtoillers wp^id ;be ; within a few, miles of the port, and white pine, jvould^^ become a yaluable article of export. .The ; sawmills would have, to draw their supplies from r?6x^n; bufc, ;^ithpufc/;the line from Wei lington being; constructed via Foxton; r lhey' would be no nearer than jit present. *' : In the.face.-of the, opening portiojifdf Mr. -Gowbb's resolution, projipKed aifew minutes .afterwards, to the 'follpwihgerfoefc:~^That the settlers of Bulls,; Sftndpn. and Carnarvon having determined to form a district line of railway between Greatford and Carnarvon | .JTunotion," &c.,— we would ask him t.p .. imdl jr explain jlw&J.. the apparent paradox. Tp our dull, .comprehension it, would appear that iif -the people of 3an3bn construct a, district line to a point which will tap the present railway near Foxtpn, they will be brought just the length of their district line nearer tr> Foxton^ and the y formation of a railway on tlie^RQurtiside of the Manawahu is a matter total ly beside that particular question 1 ..'. blame either him or his fellow-workers for their exertiong to get the line; but whichever direction it may take, let the contest be fought out fairly and hono- • raiblp, between the Upper and Lower Pisjiricts. We regret to say that such has riot been the case with the Sandon men ; false issues have been raised, and dodges resorted to which do nothing more thanjprove the weakness of their side, and hawking a petition around Wanganui, the seat of the old enemy, is one of the last. Does anyone for a moment imagine that Wanganui cares one jot through whafc country the proposed line will pass, Trhether it be dismal swamp or fertile valley P Certainly, not ; and so long as passengers can be whizzed between Wellington and its . town, it is equally oblivious . whether they come borne on a crow's : back, <or shot by an electric current 'along the telegraph wire.
