_■ I notioe that your contemporary, the New Zealander, has made great, capital out., of a. typographical error which appeared m a late issue of The Times — the substitution of. a "y " tor an " o " i» the ward topography. As the context plainly indicated the word intended, the pseudo-sarcastic- editor must have been hard up for a j"ke, and correspondingly reckless of space, when m addition to a lurid introduction he gave <Oiuethiiig less than a column, to, the extract m order to properly fix the point of the juke upon the minds, ot his readers. Wherever tne context or- the sense of the sentence will convey, the meaning of the writer, typographical errors, be they, ever so, absurd, are by no means, amusing; but there are times m which the substitution of a letter, while being totally different from the meaning o£ the author, is at the same rfcuue perfect sense, and the following is a case m point. Sum,© time ago, the (Jingo Daily Times t in. speaking oi the early career of the lafte Speaker of the .Legislative Oauneil, referred to the tiu\e when Sir John was a youthful cab m a inaivhiug regiment. The mistake was not noticed until next mornin,r, when an eldi-rly gentleman of soldierly appearance called upon the editor to thank him fop tho compliment, but was then iuformed, amidst a torrent of apologies, that sub had been the word written, which the devilish printer had manipulated into cub.
