He dul not think the stop proposed, fts embodied m the resolution, a wise one, and therefore, would move as an amendment — "That the portion of the Ksid referred to be subsidised through the Maria waiu Highwaya Board, to t he amount of £100." Councillor Haloohre quite agrred with the. remarks of Councillor Q-ovef, ans the upper portion of the district was an example of the mistake which had been made, for by the propose;! step the Highways Board was relieved of its functions, and a great deal of harm thus done. Ho was quite willing to support tho amendment, which he thought would meet Councillor Rockstro.w'u wishes. Councillor Eockstrow lajd'thajt t.he, principal- objection- to the amendment would be, that although the money would pass ou.t of the^hands of the Council, they would havo no control oxer the work, and they : would have n,o guarantee that tlio High* ways Board would; convert ifc to its legitimate use, or 3pend it m the best manner. Tlie Co,unty roads m the Riding were Tory small, and the Engineer had informed Shim that it would requira.a.t least £250 to put the ronds m repair. The CiuiHiiAK admitted that the County had beei\ top reckless' in granting' raonay to the Higlvways Bpard; m the past,' and a3 the Engineer ax-ted for both ijipdiei* there w.as not much liklshood of the Gonnty being, pjaced at a. disadvantage, atill a^ a principl*} he held tlmt the Council ahould hold control of-tbo'xhdhejf so roted..
