PALMERSTON V. FOXTON.

A cricket mutch between the Clubs of ib» above-named plaoei was played on Saturday, on the 'ground af' the latter, but proved a very hollow affair indeod,. ,The Palmorston men left town on Friday night, so as to commenoo the' match at nine a'cjaok- next morning, m order to leave by the afternoon train, bat unfortunately*, when the day broke it was ushered m with a perfect torrent, of rain, wlitfjh continued without cessation dunn/; the whole. of the day. Not* withstanding the drawback, however, play commenced at cloven o'clock, the Faxtonians (join* to the wickets. From the very outt set it was seen that the visitors were too n\Uch for the local team, for whilst the highest score of the latter was 6, no less than, six- wickets fell for as many ducks* eggs. The fielding of the Palmeraton men was beyond all praise, and some idea of the bowling, wiofeat- peeping, and long-stopping may be formed, when it is observed that the extras against them only amounted to one bye. In those particular items the Foxtomans were sadly at. fault j for, as will be seen by the scare, had. the Palmerston men not made a single run, they would have won the match .with 20 to spare, the wides alone amounting to that number. This if the more a matter far surprise as the u.p-oountry players were led to believe that m the matter of bowling their opponents were invincible, .and Isq strong and general was this impression lliat before the match three to one were freely given upon Fomton. Certainly the ground was m a deplorable state, being nothing mare nor less than a quagmire, but" the oondition should necessarily have been as bad for the fielding and bowling, of one team as the other. were entertained at a capital spread m Howe's, Hotel given by the Foxfcon Club, and they one and all speak m the highest terms of the very excellent feeling which prevailed and the hospitality with which they were treated by their opponents. .
