The Wanganui Herald evidently holds to the Scriptural command " Ask and you shall receive." Its latest project for enriching itself at the expense of its neighbors, as a refreshing specimen of coolness, deserves to bo rescued from oblivion. It is pretty well-known that Manawatu County was considerably plundered to endow the Wanganui Harbor Board, and emboldened by success, the Herald suggested, as ft moans of reducing the borough taxes, that application should be made to the Government for 2000 acres of Momahaki land, now being surveyed. The cream of the joke, however, is that it argues that as it secured the Harbor Endowment with so little difficulty, its latest scheme of aggrandisement could be carried out with equal facility. Unfortunately, however, for the success of the proposition the journalistic guardian of Patea County does not see the matter m the same light, puts a veto on the arrangement, and characterises its contem porary's "impudence as utterly astounding." This is a harsh way of putting it, but yet we think that if the Herald claims credit for modesty, it will be of a Tery peculiar character. Wanganui eertaiuly has not a Minister for its member, nevertheless so far it has managed to secure a large share of the lk loves and fishes." It is a perfect cormorant, and after having swallowed up 25,000 acres belonging to Manawatu on one side, it opens its rapacious jaws for a gulp at its unfortunate neighbor on the other.
