PALMERSTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly meeting was held at the school-room, on Monday evening. Pr§r Messrs. Snelson .(choir) Coleman, Gtoochsson, Keeling, and Warburton. A letter was read from Mr Linton, stating his inability to attend, owing to, important business. The Secretary was directed to obtain through the medium of the Manawatc Tia*ES the minutes of the last meeting but one, which had been omitted to be entered by the retiring sscratary. The Chairman stated the alteration, to, the approaches, and the improvements of the play ground had been taken m hand by the sub-committee, but not yet carried out, owing to the insumcency oi labour, m, the district. It was reported be the committee that Mrs Locke had passed; aa assistant teacher, and Misses Relf, G-oodisson, and Dillon, as pupil teachers. It was further reported that the attendance had fallen off, that the following . children were habitually absent without leave, vis : — ftirls-^Albertu Fatewon, .Jessie Wright, Mary Pepper, Fanny Thompson. Boys— rFrancis Rogers, William Hanlon, Thomas, Montague* Albert Guthrie, Charles; Gfcuthrie, Charles Pearson, upon, which Mr- Wabbubtok proposed, and Mr CqxeajAK seconded—'' That Mr Locke take the 1 necessary atep3 to. enforce attendance m "accordance with, the CjompujUory Clauses of the Act." Carried. Mr CoiiBMCAN here remarked upon the absurdity of applying for a second school, while the attendance m the one already m existence was so. unsatisfactory. Mrs Dillon's account was passed for payment. Mr Ke-exikO: then brought under- the notice bf the Committee, thenecossity for the erection of a porch, for the children's caps and cloaks, and the Chairman thought the next quarter's subsidy J would cover the expense, upon which Mr Keelino proposed, and Mr W'AEBjcrR.TQN; seconded.-—. " That a porch be at once erected for the children's caps and cloaks." Carried.. Mr Coleman suggested that a treat be given to the cnildrcn at the end of the year — to which the Chairman replied that ■ all the funds m hand had been voted fo prizes,. Mr Warburton agreed with Mr Coleman's idea, and suggested that steps .should be- taken to get up a treat on the occasion of the distribution of prizes at the end of the year, which was approved o>f. This concluded the business, and meeting adjourned until the. Ist Monday m December.
