The nominations for representation af the various Ridings m the County Council will take place on Monday next, and so far as we have heard that there is likely to be conrests m two Ridings— Taonni and Awahou. There ia, however, to be a slight difference m the constitution of the Council from hitherto. For instance, m the. post. Taonui had two representatives,- but as the town' of Palmerston is m that Riding, and as the formation of the Borough deprived the Riding of a largo .number of ratepayers, it could nob claim more than one representative. Manchester Riding, on the contrary, has now reached sufficient importance to claim two representatives, and therefore, while the representation of Ridings may be changed, the number of Councillors will still remain tne* same— nine. No doubt Mr Henbt Sanson will be returned unopposed for the Oroua ; and Messrs Hakcoxbb, Macabthtb, Goweb, and Hbwson, for Manchester, Kiwitea, Kawakawa, and Hornwhenua respectively; but there still remains an extra member for Manchester, two for Awahou, and one for Taonui. For the new seat m the Manchester Riding we have not heard for positive who is coming forward, although it is reported that Mr Shebwill will be the choice of the electors. For Taonui there are already two candidate! m the field-^rMessrs James Lin. son and V.fM6NBA»S while Awahou haß four candidates for the two seat-^Messrs Rocestbow, Loudon; Thynnb, and Dawson. We are pleased to see that there is to be a contest m at least two of the Riding!, and it would hare given ue greater pleasure had there been an election m each one; In the first place it serves to show that the honor of representation ia thought worth fighting for, and at the same time is by no means an . indii'stibn that .the old member is the less valued on that account. Of course, at this early stage, it would be almost premature to refer to the probable result. With regard to Taonui, we are inclined to think that if the battle be fought put at the poll, Mr Linton will head the list. He has been mixed up with highways. Hiid county matters for ; the past, seven years, and perhaps' possesses a more intimate knowledge of the distri^ pt her man m it > added to which he has other qualities that admimbiy fit him for a County Councillor. Mr Monbad certainly i possesaes the merit, of being a very old And reapented settler, but he hafl not been mixed Up with matters, an acquaintance wit h which would be almost neosassry m a represents-
tive. Still, as we have said, he is an old settler, and no doubt will receive liberal support, more immediately m the district of Karero. With respect to Awahou, m our opinion the. battle' will be between Messrs Thtnne, Loudon", and Dawson, and we would be much surprised if the two former do nob again sib as Councillors.. However, " you never can tell until the numbers are up," and time alone will declare the issue.
