We have been asked to notify to our readers that the English mail, via San Francisco, will close at Palmerston North tomorrow evening at 7.45. We notice that Mr Hugh Lind Sherwill, of Feilding, haa been granted an auctioneer's 'license for the Provincial District of Wellington. Mr Foulis, Inspector nnder the Education Board, has been m the district for the past week making examinations of the various se.hools."".'. He examined the Palmerston on Friday, the Karere on Monday, the Taonui on Tuesdays and,- we believe, returns northward again to-day, examining Halcombe and Greatford on his route. . Telegraphic communication is now opened : with .Halcombe, and although the arrangements are not so far concluded as to have a direct line between that town and Wanganui, there can be little doubt that m the course pf ;<tithe' ihessages ! f roar Palmerston can be sent right through, instead of via Foxton, at at present.

It will be noticed that Mr Coleman, m another column, advertises for good bush land, suitable for the site of a saw-mill. As there is no scarcity of the commodity within easy distance of Palmerston; tliere is little doubt Mr Coleman can be easily suited. We, however, direct the attention of owners of bush land to the matter. We would draw the especial attention of business men to the sale of Corporation leaseholds to take place to-day. The land 13 situated m Corporation street, or what will.be better understood as a continuation of Broad street, and adjoining Mr Moffat's butchery. Being m the very centre of the business part of the town, they are unsurpassed for business sites. The leases have fourteen years to run. The "Rangitikei Advocate," m its last issue, has a cleverly-written article showing the absurdity of the department over which Dr. Lemon presides, m: its treatment of the Sanson residents. We heartly endorse the view 3 expressed by our contemporary with regard to the cheese-paring policy adopted ; but as we intend to refer to the like treatment of the Palmerston office, we will leave our remarks for another time. The Evening Cerberus at Wanganui scoffs at our exposition of " its well-grounded complaints, and asserts that not having ssen the " Charleston Herald " for some months, ib was impossible its information, re the police, could have been received from that source. We can inform our Wanganui logician that we have not seen the Charleston paper for a much longer time, but we did see the self-same extract m another paper, which evidently furnished the imaginative scribe with materials for his gushing leaderette. The sale of town sections m Palnierston, on Saturday, was a great success, and the high prices realised, a matter.of comment* In fact, so high were the rates ruling, that many were of opinion that some of the bids were not genuine. This, we are m a position to state, is not true, for we made the following extract from the sale book. There were seventeen properties put up for sale, thirteen of which were disposed of at prices ranging from £80 to £155 per section j the remaining four were withdrawn. Some people have an insane love of giving worry and vexation to their friends, taking a morbid delight m the fact that they are the cause of anxiety to others. The man Charles Cleaver, believed to have been lost m the bush at Halcombe, and about whom the settlers were so disturbed, has turned up again all right. He had secretly taken his departure, and when discovered was at work on another contract, quite oblivious or heedless of fche anxiety of his friends on his behalf. We are pleased to see that some efforts are being made for the formation of a Volunteer Corps for Palmerston, and from what we have heard there is not the slightest doubt that a Company can be easily raised. Thirty Volunteers are required to come forward before the Government will take action m the matter, and already over fifty names have been enrolled. A meeting has been called for Friday night week, at which it is possible Mr Bezar, drill-instructor, from Wanganui will be present, so that those desirous of enlisting should make sure to be m attendance. Mr Morrah, the Inspector of the Bank of Australasia, has been m the district during the past week, visiting the various branch banks m the Manawatu. We understand that he has purchased half an acre m the Manchester Square, Feilding, for the sum of £700, whereon to erect the branch bank. The position is one of fche most prominent and central m Feilding) and the bind is looked upon as a decided bargain. The new bank m Palmerston is progressing satisfactorily, the chimneys; frame work and roof being finished, and when completed it will be a most desirable addition to the architecture of the town. ■ "It is an ill wind that blows nobody good," and the recent contest m the No. 2 Ward of the Manawatu Highways Board was the means of increasing the funds of that body by £67 9s 3d. The Returning Officer, Mr James Linton, very wisely made it a sine qua non before electors exercising the franchise that they should be clear upon the rate-book, and the above neat little sum was the result. As fche Carnarvon was the only ward out of seven where there.was a contest, the rate- fund was not augmented m the same proportion as if there had been opposition m the remaiuder, thereby necessitating the recording of votes. A serious accident, bufc fortunately unattended with loss of life, occurred m Woodville on Friday. It appears that a foreigner, w ho is known by fche sohriquet of " Frenchy," was working m the bush on Mr Holder's land, when a tree falling upon him he received a compound comminuted fracture of the leg below the knee, the bone protruding through the flesh. Dr. Akers was summoned from Palmerston, -who having attended the sufferer during the night, next morning had a matlrass placed upon an easy van, by which the patient was taken on to the Napier Hospital. A subscription list was opened m Woodville for the relief of the poor fellow, and in' less than one hour over £30 was collected and handed to him. "If the mountain will not go to Mahomet, Mahomet must go to the mountain." We understand it was the wish of a number of the promoters of the Sandon Railway to hold another public meeting m the district, but m deference to the people of Foxton its venue has been changed to that town, and a meeting is consequently to be. held at an early date, to push forward the movement. If "determined energy and perseverance should secure success, decidedly the Saridonians have commanded it, the persistent manner m which they have followed up the scheme from its inception, being beyond all praise, and calculated to command the good wishes of all. A preliminary meeting for the formation of a Palmerston Town Band was held m the Foresters' Hall on Saturday. Several members of the old band took part m the proceedings, and Mr Coleman promised to give his best efforts to the promotion of the object. A large number instruments are at present m the possession of the various members of the Lite band, and it was suggested that the holders should be communicated with upon the matter. It was deemed advisable to call a meeting by advertisement of those desirous of joining, and as will be seen one has been convened for this evening at ieven o'clock m the Foresters' Hall, when it ia to be hoped that those favorable to the movement will be m attendance. We have received from the publisher, Howard Lockwood, a miniature copy of "The American Mail and Export Journal," printed from electrotype plates made by a recent and improved process of photo-en-graving. It is afac-simile of fche May number of the journal, and while the original copy is nine inches by twelve, the miniature edition is three inches by four. The wood cuts, and even the reading matter, although of the most minute character, have been transferred- to paper with a clearness and faith fulness truly wonderful. The copy i* certainly a curiosity as a specimen of the result of phototypic science, and as showing the march of progress m the " black art." At last the unsightly phstruetiqns which have so long blocked ' up Maih-Btreet are tp> he removed. Mr Powell ha* received mL

structions to inspect tho proposed alterations with a view to their commencement. These we believe will include the removal of the present goods sheds, additions to the station master's residence, and the erection of a lamp room m connection with the station. We understand the work will be commenced without delay. While upon these matters, we might ask the Public Works Department when it is proposed to commence the erection of the platform at Terrace End? Talk of the Circumlocution Office ! It requires half a life time to secure a promise from tho Department, and. the other half to- get it to put the promise into effect. The last sitting of County Council, the as at present constituted, take 3 place today. We hear with regret that Mr Sielson has firmly determined, with his expiration of office, to retire from all further representation of the County. During the time he has represented the Taonui Riding he has been an energetic, attentive, and withal impartial member; and seeing that Mr McNeil, the second councillor for the Riding, has signified a similar intention, the loss will be the more seriously felt. By the new adjustment of the Ridings, Taonui will, m future, have but one member; and as Mr McNeil's intended absence from the Colony had determined him to retire, it Was hoped that the services of his colleague would have been retained. As such is not to be the case, however, the electors of Taonui Riding, and the people of Palmerston, which is m that Riding, owe a debt of gratitude to both their late members fdr their services m the past. We have not heard mention of a candidate to fill the vacancy, but it .is reported that there will bo three applicants for the suffrages of the electors of Awahou — Dr. Rockstrow, Mr F. Loudon, and Mr H. Dawson. I The usual monthly meeting of fche Man- j Chester Highways Board was held on Saturday, Mr Bailey presiding, and there were also present, Wardens, Bartholomew, and Cumming. The following are the various resolutions passed : — That the Board hold its meetings m the Manchester Highways Board office, Mauchester-sfcreefc, m place of the Corporation Offices j that the Chairman write to the Manawatu Highways Board, re Henderson's line ; that the Engineer be instructed to remove the stagnant water m front of Brown's Hotel j that thei Secretary purchase a safe, and eight chairs for the office, the price of first named article not to exceed £30 ; that seventy-five per cent be paid as progress payments on any work contracted for, and that contractors be allowed to sublet on the approval of the Engineer ; that tenders be called for bush falling and clearing on Nannestad's road to the Manuka clearing; that the Engineer be instructed to make an estimate of the cost of forming and metalling Eyre-street. The consideration of a petition received from John Monrad, and other settlers was held over till next meeting. The following accounts were passed for payment, after which the Board" adjourned until the 2nd of November :— J. W. Blackmore, £7 10s ; P. Curreen, £7 7s ; York andLankshear, £100 ; W. Smitson, £5 12s 6d.
