THE CARNARVON ELECTION.
[Bt oub Special Rbpobtmb.] The election for' the Carnarvon, or _?o, 2, Ward of the Manawatu Highways Board, _ came off at Sanson on Monday, and wu throughout a particularly keen contest. Both candidates were pretty evenly balanced m public favor, and although Mr Rockell hod a large number of supporters, the knowing ones had singled out Mr Dawson as the future Warden. As the representative, of Douglas & Co., that gentleman could fairly count upon a long tail, and the result proved that those who were of that opinion had not miscalculated. The electors rolled up to tho poll^which was held at Oakley's Hotel— m grand style, ' and residents of Foxton, from the seaside and the Rangitikei River, - all flocked into Sanson to elect their man. At the close of the poll, the Returning . Officer, Mr James. Linton, made the follow* ing announcement : — Dawson ... ... 70 Roekel ... ... 59 Majority for Dawson .„ 11_» A Before his departure, the Returning Officerhad the following document handed to him,, which, however, had neither heading nor address:— "In consequence of Mr Dawson's nam* not being on the rate-book as a ratepayer, we, the undersigned, protest against Mr Dawson either as a voter or a candidate, _• not being qualified according to the Act. (Signed) Hbnbt Hakmowd, Donald Fbazib, Xy' David Soom, ■ IwL' Qua Whmlm, -. x^Xyy . . William P»»Ny. , * r : It may be stated that Mr Dawson, on be* half of Douglas & Co., of whom he is ih* representative, and for whom he pay* the rates, recorded five votes for himself, but it will be seen that deducting those he would be still six ahead of bis opponent. The protest, therefore, must narrow itself down towhather he can come forward a* a candidate. Although the document was not addressed . to anyone m particular, we understand MrLinton intends forwarding it to the Government m connection with his report, mean* while he declared Mr Dawson the duly* qualified representative of the Ward.
