Or/E evening contemporary at Wanganui — the self-constituted watch-dog of Palmers ton interests — bewails the want of another constable m this town, ar>d states that " well-grounded complaints reach us from Palmerston that another constable is wanted." We receive this assertion with veiy great caution indeed, for two reasons : First, that no such wants exist; and secondly, if it did, no one m Palmerstou would ever dream of making the "Herald " a medium for their grievance. While on the subject, we might as well enlighten our readers as to the real origin of the "well-grounded complaints" received by our watchful contemporary. A few week sinces the " Charleston Herald " had a paragraph to the effect that " Palmerston was so badly m want of a second constable that the councillors had to lend assistance to take drunken men to the lock-up." Whether the Charleston man drew upon his imagination for his facts, or whether he alluded to Palmerston South, we know not j but evidently the Wanganui Cerebus swallowed the bait, supplied what was wanting, and waxes eloquent m a leaderette over our unprotected state. The " Herald " tried to hoax its readers into believing that it had received complaints ; won't Mr Inspector Goodall grin at how the "Herald" has been hoaxed itself?
