As will be seen m another column, tbe [ people of Foxton have takeu initiatory stops for the formation of an agricultural society for the County of Manawatu. The project: is one whici is .de-l-serving of commendation and support, I and we would -especially direct the attention of settlers to an invitation issued by the promoters for co-operation. Although the project has been conceived m Foxton,.- it- is by no means sought to .make it a- -local institution,, but rather :to start it upon such a, basis. that far.riiers from Feilding, Palmerston, and "TSansoti, will look upon themselves; as part and parcel of it equally* with Foxton. ■ : -It is -proposed, that, the .yearly exhibitions should 'be held; at different . centres each year, and that representatives from each, locality should, have. _a voice and interest m the mode of conduct. ■■•' Ifc-:>s perfectly useless on. our part to expatiate upon the good to be derived from such associations. They have the same influence upon the fapming classes as school examinations have upon soholars— rtend to instil a_ desire for emulation and .legitimate rivalry, .calculated to act as a spur on the road to progress and perfection. Persons -may say that the county is . too : young or not mature enough for.the.os-tablish- ■ ment of such associations, but: this is a /mistake. From the -result. of -the. 'meetling held -'in Foxton oil- Thursday there | can be no doubt fifty subscribers can be easily obtained, and we. have a clis- ! tinct recollection of being present at an ['annual dinner given by,, the North i Otago Agricultural ' And Pastoral Asso-eiation-r-perhaps one of the most flourishing clubs m the Colony — at which its formation was, referred to, and it certainly had been started under greater difficulties.- Year after- year the countyis receiving- new settlers, the olcL ones becoming more settled, their struggles less trying, and : Ira-vine*- accomplished the. .acquisition, of stqcjev the, liext, aimshould be to improve the breed, arid produce ' quality.-, as "well . as : quantity..; We feel we need scarcely say more an] the matter.- The" subject is. due with which farmers. are well acquainted, and it needs no argument of burs to convince thorn bf .the benefits to be; derived from the association m question.
