The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1878.

As might have been expected, the publication of tho new; time table, has put the Foxton. people upon their mettle, and they havo ; talcen prompt action m the matter. A public meeting was held on Tuesday night, m which the framer of the scheme met with the deserts which he richly deserved, and a deputation was appointed to interview Mr Lawson, the_ Commissioner, upon the matter. Further than that, the Chairman of the County Council, forwarded the following telegram to Mr Lawson :— '" At a public mooting I was requested to ask for equal facilities, both goods and passenger trains .as, are proposed to-be given to Wanganui, m view' of the interests of the port and district of Manawatu." To that the following reply; from Mr W. Wise by, acting for the Commissioner, was- received :—'' -Be your telegram to-day, we have not tlie .requisite engine power to give additional facilities at both ends, but you may rely upon having it at the Foxton end as soon as we are m a position. In the. meantime, the Manager is instructed to afford 'specials' for goods traffic, as far as practicable-"' This is all, very fine, 'but if o.ur/Foxton friends .will put, much faith m the promise that "as soon ns we are. m a "position," &c... .we, are every much afraid they, will wait, for a long time until ! they have tlieir request granted. There is some sort of a rumor abroad that Mr Lawson intends, visiting the Manawatu,^— in fact he : was expected -up- by coach -on Thurs-. day— but the deputation appointed should ascertain for Pertain if such is the .case or riot, and if tho latter prove correct, firpily request that lie sltouW do sp : without delay.; Were he to visit Foxton .more.qould bo done to place the gross injustice clearly "be fore Him m ten minutes-, than m as< many columns of a paper, or. sheets of foolscap. Formal ro-quest-should be made to him to visit the district; and-; judge fm" himself whether, tho* concession asked for is inipractic^ able.
