We are pleased to see that onr contemporary, the " Wanirajmi Heruld," is not totally bereft of all shame, and that when it wants to descend to more than ordinary depths of mendacity it employs a tool without personalty, character, or scruple. The- " fKshy " writer with the appropriate nickname, whose occasional productions grace its columns, throws the iEgis of his muddy mantle over the shoulders of Mr -llothbb.au, and seeks to make him out a very injared being. Well, we have no objection to such, gratitude for favors received, but. when the writer insinuates thht our strictures have been dictated from a spirit, of jealousy because Mr liotheram had not sent us presents of delicacies, freight \free, we hurl the statement bacic to the polluted soui'co from whence it came. We defy anyone to say that we asked or received one pin's point compliment from either the present or ]>ast Manager.. C-'an the '* .Hera Id" say as much? We think not; and when the return asked for by Mr J/ykk is furnished, the public will be able to value its fatherly protect i-)ii' -of. the Railway. Manager at. its true value. Gnu the*' llurald " deny that—in considemlioii of fulsome laudation, and baok-surat-chiiig— Mr liol.ieraai, contrary to all precedent, allowed tho correspon dents of the protectorate journal aavta hluuche to lyavel

from one end oE the line to the other at all times P Can Mr liotheram deny tliat to another paper published m Wanganui was given a free pass for a tradesman m Fox ton to do likewise; and is Mr liotheram aware that the: possessor of the free pass m question travelled up the line— pushing his business, and taking orders therefor P If not, we can inform both it and "Bai'aeouta " that such is the fact. Can Mr liotheram deny that) the station-master of Palmerston was made to alter his books m order to return money which he had rightfully demanded from a correspondent of the ''Herald" who had no pass (possibly m use by some of the others) ? We have been accused of trying to get Mr liotheram dismissed. This we deny; but m getting that gentleman to scatter, broadcast and indiscriminately, Press passes to persons earning their livelihood at other occupations, tho "Herald" has done far more to jeopardise Mr Itotheram's position than ever we have. In fact, to such an extent has Mr Rotheram placed the Government Itailway at the service of his warm supporters,, that we are not sure but the very runners of the paper have travelled as "Press." OE course '-^ w ; as all right; the propriptor of the paper is a : Da b(nje"ft Minister, and any lache "which brought fish to the net was open rather to comnienda- : tion than the reverse. So much for favors received, and by whom ? We did not mean to speak of Mr Hotheram's favoritism, but his protector has courted it, and we trust he relishes the' result. Now, with regard to another statement m tho same mendacious production, relative to the removal oE the Times to Feilding. The step was never once contemplated, and the idea^ never had a existence save m the imaginative mind of the writer. He says the Feilding people are determined to have an orsjan of their own. We hope so;- it will be an evidence of the progression of Manawatu, and when it does come we will welcome it m the same spirit as we did our Foxton contemporary. We have sufficient faith m the Coxmty to believe that all three could exist independently of each other, instead of the one "seeking to vituperate and vilify the other out of existence, after the manner of Wanganui journalism. . ■ .
