AN EXPLANATION.

TO THE EDITOB. Sib,— ln yoiir issue of the 21sfc inst. I noticed a local m reference to my claim against the - -Mana watu County Council, from which I conclude tlie facts of the case have, not been clearly represented to you, and would. therefore lead a reader to believe that my claim is an extra charge on the amount paid to- me for a portion of the road already completed. The following is a statement of the facts of • the case, for which, if you will kindly allow space m your columns, I shall. be greatly, obliged. In accordance with instructions received from the County Council I prepared plans and specifications for the formation, bridges and culverts, of 310 chains of road m the Kiwitea Block, and called tenders, to be received on the 13th of May. For this work and the supervision I should receive remuneration at the rate of 5 per cenfc. on the amount of the accepted tender when. the formation, &c, was completed. The tenders were duly V received on the day appointed, but the Council considered . them all too high and declinedfchem ; theref orethe work was hot proceeded with as expected. • My claim is for tlie time and expense of surveying and preparing the . above plans and specifications, and the decision of the Council m reference to this I cannot accept. — I am, &c, • x ■xx , Jno. Babton. - , Wellingfcori, August 24th, 1878.
