"We notice that the, Wangahui moniing journal has alluded to us. in an indirect sort of way on account of our recent strictures on the railway manager. "We would very much prefer that it should attack us openly rather than do so. by a side-wind, as m the former case we happen to have a few facts we might make known which would "for .ever, set at rest any doubt as to the privileges granted to Wanganui residents/ At the Baine time, however,- we are pleased tliat our contemporary should open its columns m defence of Mr Rothebam, inasmuch as by his official position his mouth is; closed, and consequently no niafeter how unfounded may be the statement made against Mm, he is unable to ; defend; himself. The"Chronicle"^Bp'eakiiig f cMaiiilj with an air of authority— says>tbat
the blame has not been saddled upon the right horse, but the " Chronicle" has- either said too much or too little..; and as it appears that... it is behind the scenes, it is a pity- that it did ntft go a K^fcle farther and enlighten those wlio are kept s<f completely iv the dark as to the real culprit. : Through the same medium tve are informed, that two new engines are now bpirig put m working order, which are designed for goods traffic, and that when they are available much of the disorder, delay, and inconvenience * hitherto experienced will be done away with. Taking the article in^the "Chronicle" as a whole, there are some views which we have advocated through these columns, and other suggestions which we now heartily endorse. We have no doubt it speaks m all sincerity, and swayed by a sense of gratityde, when it dilates ao glowingly upon the merits of the General Manager ; but as we, at this end of the line, happen unfortunately to be at the light side of the scale, it cannot be expected that we should view Mr. Eothebam's attractions through tho large end of the telescope.- It is- cheering to learn #Kat therejisr.at'l^t.'a prSspedt of -a. change, jand we only^hope that with the new! order 9! things. w,e will also, bask m! the sunshine of managerial favor. jWe have therdfipbsition to be grateful, and,. if Mr,.E6THEBAM will only give' us caiisevlio do so, he will findi tiiat;we wiUJie just as ready and willing tb ; give him full credit when credit can bejußtlytclaimedi
